Hi mom, I always enjoy your posts, they bring some reason to the forum that can get a little crazy.

We are really enjoying playing other sports. And I am finding that when we go 2-3 days with no tennis, she plays better than ever. I think her and I playing one on one basketball this summer has improved her movement a ton.

Also been doing some track stuff. Hurdles are fun. 40 yard dashes, etc.

I'm sure she's bringing her competitive side to any other sports and exercise!

I love the attitude and committment; wish you all the best!

For me, we struggle with $40/wk and a five minute drive.

Hank Haney (or Butch Harmon for that matter) do not charge much for pro's or even top talented juniors.

They charge $500/hour (or MORE!) for corporate outings, mostly.

The best boy in my country under 16s (he was around top 10 in europe in 14s) learned tennis from his dad until he was like 10 or 11. His dad bought all the dvds and books from Nick Bollettieri and studied them carefully and coached his kid until they moved and a very good coach discovered him (the club he belonged to paid most of the coach's salary I believe, as he was also one of the coaches at that club).

You should be proud. We did it with spit and paste until my kid was 11 or 12. I was a collegiate athlete but never played tennis. Tennis is a game anyone can learn to play and a game you can learn to teach. Have fun with it and enjoy the ride!

I have a young son that just turned 7 and has been hitting regularly for about 2 yrs. He just starting playing 10's tournaments about 5 months ago. We live in a small town with only one teaching person. He doesn't charge a whole lot considering and that's good since we don't have the greatest income in the world. My wife is a school teacher and I'm a police officer so resources are limited. We don't necessarily have a problem with the coach as far as teaching. Our problem lies in the fact that the teacher student ratio is like 20:1. He also doesn't really believe in teaching with the quickstart balls. There is only like 2 other kids my son's age in the program so the only real match experience he gets is when he plays tournaments. The coach feels like he has great potential, and every tournament we go play at other coaches or asking how old he is because he has great strokes. We have done some background on some of the coaches that have asked about them and they have produced some outstanding junior players. We talk to them about money and tell them about our limited resources and they all say they can help some with the cost but not a whole lot. I also hit all the time with my son and can coach him to some extent but for him to really excel I think we need to go a different route than what he is doing. My frustration is my kid works his butt off and puts forth every ounce of effort he can and has great strokes but can't go to another level because of money. It is just really frustrating and was just wanting to vent along with hearing some thoughts and feedback from more experienced parents in this situation.

"Biography

Richard Williams is one of six children and only son of single mother Julia Mae Williams. After graduating from high school Williams moved to California, where he met Betty Johnson, whom he married in 1965. They had two daughters and three sons before divorcing in 1973.[1] Williams met Oracene Price in 1979, who had three daughters by her late husband. They married in 1980 after Venus was born.[1] They lived for a time in Lansing, Michigan, but eventually moved to Compton.

Williams decided his daughters would be tennis professionals when he saw Virginia Ruzici playing on television.[1] He began taking Venus and Serena to the public tennis courts, then soon got them into Shreveport tennis tournaments. In 1995, Richard pulled them out of a tennis academy, and coached them himself.

Serena won the US Open in 1999; Venus beat Lindsay Davenport to win the 2000 Wimbledon title. After that victory, Richard shouted "Straight Outta Compton!" (in reference to a song by N.W.A based on an area in Los Angeles) and jumped over the NBC broadcasting booth, catching Chris Evert by surprise and performing a triumphant dance. Evert said that the broadcasters "thought the roof was coming down".[citation needed]

Good question. In my experience a highly motivated parent who has good playing experience can do all the coaching until about age 11. He/she has to put in a lot of time studying books and videos and has to follow a "system".
I like Oscar Wegner on the groundstrokes for youngsters. Also, the parent can watch local hp coaches in action with other kids. I did hour after hour of that. I have seen kids get to top 5 or 6 in their section and top 100 in the country doing this. Going pro may be different, not sure.

I hate he has hooked up with the 3-D nonsense. They take kids with little talent and get the parents top pay tons of money for a 3-D analysis with the promise that will magically allow them to fix everything. That part of the business makes my skin crawl.
It is only 200 bucks a session for the 3D, or at least what I got out of the web site. We are discussing this now in the 3D Analysis thread in the Tips section.

It's not the price that bothers me. IMHO, Macci needs gimmicks like this and pictures in his promo stuff of Roddick, the young Williams sisters, when he was a kid.

In my personal experience I watched and listened to him giving privates for many hours a few years back. I did not see or hear anything different or better than you could get from a local top hp coach. In fact, in many cases the local coaches, in my opinion, are better.
