Main/Cross string tension different

I'm always confused about this. Most stringer string the cross 2lb lower than the main (assuming full bed). If you ask for 58lb tension, then would you string main at 58lb and cross at 56lb, or main at 59lb and cross 57lb to get a combine 58lb total?

If you ask for 58lb, you'll get 58/58.

Who are these most stringers that you're talking about? I know of no one who does this.

I was just asked to do 60/58.
I tried to tell him that 59/59 would be practically identical.
He would not be convinced.
I think it's one of those old wives' tales that still linger on.

Doesn't stringing the crosses a couple of pounds lower than the mains give the ball a lower launch angle?

"It's recommendable to string the cross strings with 1 kg (1 kg equals 2.2 lbs)) less weight than the main strings; by that you equalize the different length of mains and crosses."

No one does that anymore?

String it at 59/59, give it to him, see if he notices, if he doesn't, never string crosses lower for anybody else again

This is excellent stringing practice here.

The cross string is strung 2 lbs less to compensate for increased friction( due to weaving) so the mains and crosses have equal tension.

If you were compensating for increased friction, you would string the crosses higher, not lower.
The rationale that I have heard is a)lower crosses widens the sweetspot, and b) lower crosses allow the mains to move more freely, thereby increasing spin.
I don't believe that either of these hypotheses have been tested scientifically.
This is for fullbed, mind you.
Hybrids are a different animal.
