Default Fist pumps after first game?

I play a lot of guys that pump their fists and yell "Let's go!" If they take the first game or break my serve etc.
Does anyone else find this annoying?

If you find it annoying that accomplishes what your opponent wants. He's now in your head. Ignore it. Save fist pumps and "come on" selectively and for points that matter. Positive emotion and pumping yourself up every now and then is a good thing.

Some players just don't like it and refuse to do it. That's fine. Focus on your effort, attitude and game plan every point and you'll be a better player for it in the long run.

I agree with andfor, they are doing it to get into your head and they are succeeding.

Agree with above. Don't let it bother you. Matches can be long and as andfor points out, players need to pump themselves up emotionally at certain times. I see some juniors fist-pump and come-on after just about every point, which can backfire as they then don't have another emotional level to go to when they need it. The "pump up" becomes routine instead of motivating.

No one will ever stop such behavior because you find it annoying. It's all on you to get it out of your head.

Personally, I have the most respect for the players that can play and win virtually silent. No hollern, gruntn, etc. just play the game. That said, there is nothing you can do but ignore it, maybe occasionally holler it yourself when he double faults. he should get the message.

My son is a 16 year old open player and runs into kids that do it all the time. My son stays calm and shows very little emotion (in tournaments). He'll grind it out with these fist pumping yellers, shake hands, and not say much. Same goes with guys that are cheating him, bad line calls, etc. You see alot of it in junior tennis. Just goes with the personalty type of the kid.

My son has played in USTA tournaments where they told the players no fist pumping was allowed.

Possibly. Never know with the USTA. My understanding is it's not to be done in the direction/face of the opponent which would be clearly construed as a taunt. Again, you never know with a USTA ref. Was at a very large national level 18s last week. Seriously, I directly heard a ref say, "don't give me that look" and "I don't like your tone".

It's best for the player to know the rules themself. Don't just go on what is said. Trust but verify.

My son is quiet, win or lose, you couldn't tell from him.
He doesn't care if they fist pump or whatever.

However, I find it in the worst possible sportsmanship when I see the kid fist pumping for a double fault or a ball into the net.

I have seen one kid say, "lets go" on EVERY SINGLE POINT of the entire match. He did it even louder when his opponent made a mistake. It gets to you after a while.

Ya, I've seen that lately, who's teaching the "lets go" lingo??, where is that coming from, it can't be a coincidence.

Many coaches teach positive body language and positive emotion. The positive emotion needs to be used selectively after big points. I don't believe that any coach is teaching it to be used every point. Here's the way I see it if a player is saying "let's go" after every point. 1. They are trying to emulate their favorite pros when they see them do it on TV. Since they are kids they mistakenly take it to the extreme and say it to often. This wastes energy and gives them no emotional level to elevate to when it matters. 2. Players that do it every point likely have their own confidence issues (or lack of confidence) and unconsciously think they are compensating for it by saying "let's go after every point. This may well be a weakness that can be exploited 3. Lastly lowest on the ranking is it's done to get into their opponents head.

Pumping yourself up can be done in a sportsman like manner. And don't let it bother you when the opponent does it. No matter how often they do it.

Play hard and let your effort and racquet do the talking. Battle hard every point and most of all enjoy the game. These are things a player can control. Ignore what others are doing that you have no control over.
