Default Biggest Single Goal For 2007

What's your *one* biggest tennis goal for 2007?

Is there a stroke you want to master? A person you want to beat? A tournament you want to win? A bad habit you want to break?

For me, I think I want my 2007 goal to be transitioning to singles. I started playing tennis as a 2.5 retriever/pusher. Even won a tournament.

Alas, I have become horrible at singles due to a single-minded focus on doubles and an inability to hit with depth. I'm working on my groundstrokes, but when I'm tight or under pressure, every ball lands on the T, and I lose.

I plan to fix this in 2007 and perhaps enter a September tournament as a singles player. So my 2007 goal is to learn to hit groundstrokes with depth. And spin, of course. No pushing allowed.

Continue working on the continental serve, flat forehand, and backhand volley. Continue with getting better at mixing up spins and pace and adding new twists like a backhand slice approach shot. Work on adding more depth on shots and placement when going for angles. Continue to keep being more and more aggressive especially against 4.5s and play more 4.5 doubles. I would like to win all my 4.0 league matches and even win a 4.0 tournament next summer and then get bumped to 4.5.

Also just remember that tennis is a game and make sure I am keeping it fun. Never take it too seriously, be generous with calls, keep a good reputation, and make new friends.

Improve intensity during the match. Strengthen core. Improve SW forehand grip. Improve shot selection.

Splitstep on every shot and watch the ball come off of the opponents strings. I think that its the one habit that I could pick up that would improve my game the most. get to the point where I don't even have to think about it and I am always reacting to the ball on contact.

first develop a reliable kick serve, improve serve variety, and get better groundstroke preparation so i can play better w/ kids that can hit harder

also break top 50 in New England and maybe top 20 in Eastern MA

Remember to watch the friggin' ball! Sounds too basic, right? But still my biggest "gotcha" after over 30 years of tennis, and the source of the majority of my unforced errors. When I watch Fed hit, that's what I envy most about him (OK, maybe after his footwork)...his unswerving ability to keep his peepers locked onto the ball on every stroke.

That's a good and reachable goal. Here's a hint: Practice as you play. Don't just hit the ball back and forth...think DEPTH on every shot. Eventually it will sink in.

Is that possible to get a computer rating to bump you up 2 levels in the same year?

I am hoping to do the same myself (at least skillwise). I am currently a very strong 3.0 and I am self-rating for a winter-mix league at 3.0 and then playing a men's spring league at 3.0 as well. I have a feeling I will be disqualified in the men's league because of the amount of playing and improvement I will have gained by then. I have been playing off and on for 6 years, but I got VERY serious about improvement about 4 months ago. If I can hang with a 4.0 player by the end of next year I will be very happy.

You can get bumped 2 levels. I have seen it before. An athletic lady who hadn't played much tennis self-rated at 3.0 and then won all her tournaments pretty easily so they bumped her to 4.0 but she appealed and played 3.5 and again won most of her matches so she got bumped to 4.0 again the next year and has stayed there now.

My goal for the 2007 season is a lot different than 2006.

I wanted to maintain my ranking in the top 10 Pacific NW, which I accomplished.

This year I want to raise the level and play in at least 3 National events and raise my national ranking into the top 50's. I REALLY want to play in the clay court tournament in Indianapolis later this year. So if you knowof a free place to stay let me know.
