getting started in tennis OUTSIDE of school

well im in the 11th grade, and 16 years old(turned 16 in august this year(2006)). im thinking about getting into USTA and all. and information you guys can helpo me with?

well.............................. i really want to get better at tennis. and i don't if parents will let me take lessons because i keep asking and they won't pay for me. i don't have a job to pay for them so yea. so basically im looking for some match play in tournaments every once in a while

Well first step is to find out the local tournaments, and get a rundown of the level of the tournament, and then plan ahead and apply to whichever one you think you can fit into your schedule. Start with district level tournaments, and if you stack up a lot of points try to get into sectionals, and even nationals if you are good enough.

Also find a tennis welcome center because they generally have very cheap courts, so you can perhaps find a partner of equal level and split the cost of the court so you can practice outside of tournaments.

and im not sure what level im playing at. im guessing 3.0 or 3.5 maybe after reading that one guy talking about he played as a sub in a 3.5 level tournament, it seems that i could probably fit in that group as well. don't want to overrate mysself and get burned on the court and don't want to underrate and play moonballers

If you don't get lessons, just ask your school coach nicely to work with you alone for a bit. If your only a 3.0 - 3.5 then the 16's might be a bit tough, but you never know. Whatever you do, good luck!

hey Im 12 years ole and started playin 1.5 years ago. Im in between a 3.5 and a 4.0, is that pretty good

all this 3.0-4.0 stuff is GPA....they say ATP pros are 7.0's, but roger federer is certainly beyond the 9.0 GPA

just kidding....they are NTRP rankings....higher the ranking the better player you are...i think typically division 1 college players are 4.5-5.0, and those playing in futures and challengers are like anywhere 5.0, 5.5, 6.0, above that is the ATP circuit at 7.0

dont take my take on it, go to USTA's site and read the official descriptions...

I wish I had this problem (of getting started in tennis outside of school). Our senior school tennis team consists of myself and my twin brother. We didn't even have to try out to get on the team!
Of course, we won the regional championships and are playing the provincial championships at York University (where the Rogers Cup is played) in the summer.
