I started serious rope jumping about a week ago. I already had fairly strong legs and calves (leg pressing around 400lbs) and I'm pretty fast at the mile and sprints.
My first few times were pretty rough, but since I asked for a rope for christmas and my parents came through, I decided to stick with it. Even in this first week, I can feel the endurance in my calves building. Split stepping is so easy, it's just like jumping..only easier. I feel faster and lighter on the court more than ever before! After totally busting my ass w/ the rope, i down a protein shake and then stretch. Feel pretty okay the next day, and just go right back to it. I really advocate getting a rope and starting up, you won't regret it. A good rope is less than five bucks, so there's no reason not to! http://www.rossboxing.com/thegym/thegym26.htm is a great article on it and here is an INCREDIBLE video of the author displaying some of his techniques. Do any of you guys jump as part of your conditioning plan? |

Depends. Right now, since I'm much better than before, I go by time.
I go for 20 minutes (I probably miss 3 or 4 times and then start again) at probably 80-85% max speed. After 20 minutes is up, i throw in 10 jumps on my left leg, 10 jumps on my right leg, and then five double spins. My record for reps is 434. Got it the other night, thought i was going to die! It was like..."Okay, 200, awesome...calves sorta hurt, keep going!.....300, okay...this really hurts!" I missed going for jump 435...but i was so pumped. Spiked the rope in the grass with a big fist pump! Just do what it takes to get you sweating and your calves burning. You can try what I do, and awesome if it works for you. I am going to try getting faster at running in place and doing cross-overs. I can move around alright...but i want to get like the guy in the video! For now though...wanna at least be like Rocky in that scene in Rocky IV. You know..where he does a whole bunch of doubles in a row? It was on twice thursday night, got me real pumped to go run/jump. |

i jumped tonight and i plan to jump every day and lift every other day. 434? thats insane! my record is only 88. i did it where i jump for 1 minute and rest for 30 seconds for 6 sets. my legs were dead tired by the end of it.

Try this: Pyramid up in increments of 30 to 90, then go back down with ten seconds of rest between. Try for three sets of that total. And some of the gurus on the site (Marius - where are you man?) have some other (obscene) pyramids they do. Stretch after. Jet Last edited by Jet Rink : 01-04-2007 at 08:59 PM. |

I'm starting to wonder if the 434 was a fluke. Last night, i could only get ~310.
Going for high numbers is great for in-point concentration. That's really the biggest thing holding me back-I'm not used to hitting solid shots....so when I do, I have a natural tendency to lose focus. |

My middle school tennis coach gave us all jump ropes at the beginning of the season. We never used them but apparently his heart may have been in the right place...good man good coach.

great guys! that's good for not having jumped for a long time.
I played tennis tonight and felt awesome. So light on my feet, I was like a backboard! Jumping is awesome and I really like the benefits. |

I bought a jump rope recently and planned to use it as part of my weight loss strategy, and promptly came down with a sinus infection that lasted three months and I couldn't jump without that lovely "ice pick in the head" feeling. (The good news is, I lost five pounds from being sick so long.) I can only do a few minutes at a time now, but even so, when I'm done I know I've done something!

jumping rope is tough; I used to all the time. I always had to start out slow then stop, to get my blood going then I got into it. its a foot work drill that pays off big time if you have the heart. toss in a 5 mile run every day and you are FIT!

I recommend getting a pro jumping rope if you’re into serious rope jumping; if you know what you’re doing they can be very fast. Mine is a pro metal-one with rubber coating and wheel bearings for the handles. I have mine from power-systems.com It’s +$20, quality rope, but if you hit it too hard on an edge, it can dent the metal, which can change the normal curvature of the rope (not good!). I use mine a lot for warm-ups, endurance & speed. Plus, by coincidence it makes that sweet Prestige Classic buttery sound and the faster you jump, the louder it gets.
Also, get the right length for you. I am 5’4” and use a 8ft. rope. If you're taller, get longer one.

double spins!!!! the greatest thing you can do to get faster on the court!
believe me! you should try to make sets with 30 double spins. probably three of them or five.

30 double spins in a row? Or "double" then "single", double then single?
