Yesterday, one of the guys on EPSN (Darren Cahill??) said that he saw Roger Federer when Federer was 13, and he was not very impressed. So I wonder how Federer played like when he was still in juniors?

Well apparently Fed use to lose a lot in the juniors. I think Rochus owned him. But Cahill I am sure knows there are a lot of juniors that look great at 13-14 and never make a dent in the pros.

But then isn't Federer one of the ATP players that won both the Junior Wimbledon and Men's Wimbledon? If that's true, then he was probably pretty good back then.

I think it would be really interesting to see him play as a junior, especially seeing how dominant he is right now. |

The oldest vids of Federer that I found on youtube are 2005 (25 yrs old), but his junior years started at 1993, I think. But I agree with you.
! I just noticed that it's you from back then asking in your thread "Correct my strokes." ^_^ I remember how my friends and I were wanting to hit like you! =D But only one was successful (not me). =D How's it going? |

well he became the number 1 junior in the world one year, so apparently he didn't completely suck in the juniors.

I remember someone posted a thread about contacting Federer and Sampras. lol. If they can contact Federer, they should ask for his old vids. XD

According to wikipedia Fed won junior Wimbledon and the year ending Orange Bowl championships. They don't give any other junior tennis accolades.

The oldest Video of Federer that I've watched, was the 2001 Swiss ATP final against Tim Henman. Go to youtube and put in "federer 2001 or 01" and you will see it. He gets very emotional in the end, losing a final in front of his home crowd. Later in that year he beats Sampras at Wimbledon and there is tons of footage of that on the web. There is also, the video the Hopman cup of 2001 that he played doubles with Martina hingis, which is right in the beginning of the year. those are the older matches that I've seen of Roger.
I agree that it would be very interesting to see a really young Fed in action, specially in the Juniors to see the minute differences in his techinic but, it's hard to find vids before 2001. Although, you don't have to go that far, you can clearly see some differences in his game from 2001, 2002 and even 2003 to today. His serve was less smooth ( he had a shorter motion, using less of his body) the forehand was not as sharp and specially his foot work, wasn't was crisp as it is currently. Those are the main differences that I've spot it. Last edited by Grigollif1 : 01-15-2007 at 09:42 PM. |

I would guess, and its only a guess, that Cahill saw Federer during those more tempermental days as a junior he's confessed to. If that was the case, effort levels tend to ebb and flow, tanking can happen, etc.. I think Fed even had remnants of it early on in the pros. I recall him clearly appearing to "give up" in a match v. Rafter. I also think, with his abilities, it was the easiest "flaw" to correct and correct it he did.

when he was around 13,14 he was still losing quite a lot of matches and he used to cry when he lost matches. his mental used to be quite weak. this was all in a local paper.

Yep. I haven't seen any footage of Fed as a junior but apparently and self-admittedly he used to lose his cool on the court when he was younger and he attributes an enormous part of his success today to the maturity of his attitude on the court.

I just found this Video on youtube. It is not quite the Juniors but, this was only his second apperance at Wimbledon in 2000, against Kafelnikov. He was 18 years old I believe... pretty good stuff.

I already told you that guys the ilk of Newcombe and Roche saw Federer and thought he would be number one. At 17. Cahill is a narrow minded Australian who is hung up on certain blocks.

There is a huge difference between watching somebody at 13 and watching them at 17 in terms of judging their potential. At 17 players are near maturity. I seriously doubt that Roche and Newcombe could pick out the next #1 among 13 year olds any better than Cahill.
