yeah it was until 1989, I think.

There were several non slam events that were best of 5 throughout in the 70s as well.

Back when it was the Lipton Championships, it basically had the format of a Slam in terms of draw size and best-of-five. Commenters would speculate as to whether this should be the "fifth Slam" (much like golf where there was talk of whether the Player's Championship was Slam worthy). I don't think the tours ever really gave it any serious consideration.

I think the tourney did the right thing in scaling back to a 96 draw and best of 3 until the finals. It's still a huge, terriffic event, but not comparable to a Slam.

It's gone back and forth. Way back when it was 5 sets. I remember the '90 final specifically between Agassi and Edberg because Agassi won in 4.

was just looking through the draws of this event:

1985-1986, 128 draw, best of 5 from quarters on

1987-1989, 128 draw, best of 5 throughout

1990-present, 96 draw, best of 5 for final only(though it was best of 3 for the '91,'92,'93,'94,'95,& '03 finals)


really tough format in the 80s, Noah had to win 3 five setters & 2 four setters just to get the semis in '87! hope he had days off.
