It seems to me that while some players such as federer use the momentum of the racquet to hit the ball while others like roddick muscle the ball and use pure strength to hit it. is this true? and if so what are the advantages of each?

Momentum allows you to play within yourself and not have to overswing (causing unforced errors). I'd have to say using momentum also allows you to hit a cleaner ball.

momentum= relaxed swing from the shoulder
strength=everything into the ball-shoulder,elbow,forearm,wrist etc. |

See Gustavo Kuerten, aka the "elastic man". Perfect example of how you can generate supreme pace via flexibility and torso rotation. The arm is kept very relaxed during the swing and the ball is struck much cleaner.
