retired due to injuries, but had a great claycourt season in 2000, winning Rome & losing a 4 hour final to Guga at the French.

I think, he had a serious illness since his beginnings, heart problems or something, which hampered his career.

Magnus had a great work ethic and I really enjoyed the way he fought on the court. He should have no regrets about his career.
He survived the neck wounds and serious loss of blood from dating Martina Hingis (during her "I want to date a champion" days), but knee and hip injuries forced him to retire in 2004. If Radek (Lendl looks like my movie star brother) Stepanek is listening, always have that garlic clove and wooden stake hanging from your neck. |

Jon Wertheim had a cryptic reference to the Martina Hingis black widow effect in this week's CNNSI column. It would be amusing to see before and after records for all the men she dated.

Anybody who saw Norman's Roland Garros final against Kuerten realizes what a brilliant fighter and strategist Norman was on the court. He did not have the gifted wicked spin and court speed of Nadal, but he could match him in will and spirit. Is he still involved in tennis? He'd make a great coach.

Sverige Davis Cup
Injuries and bad luck have slowed Swedish tennis. Now that Wilander heads the Davis Cup team and guys like Norman are at hand, are there any juniors in Sweden who have the talent to be coached by these greats and become champions?

He had a hip injury which proved career ending as I recall sketchyly.
