There in spirit; here in everything else, including lousy backhand.

Just couldn't let an insult to the best BBQ in the world go unchallenged.

Hey now. 'Twasn't an insult. I merely said it wasn't my favorite. I think I said they know their stuff. There's actually a joint here in town that serves a decent (but not great) BBQ...but...has a variety of "sauces" on the table: NC-East, KC, Memphis and SC styles. I happen to like all four, depending on my mood. But there's just something about pork pulled off a pig on a smoker trailer hooked up to a pickup (or better yet, from a pit dug in the ground). Bit 'a vinegar sauce sprinkled on top. Homemade slaw. On the side, please. And a fresh glass of real lemonade. No Crystal Light, thank you very much.

Ok, now I'm hungry again.

I actually made a slow-cooked bbq from a pork shoulder...recipe was a modified version of a Cooking Light recipe. Slow cooked in cider vinegar and spices all day...then made a homemade bbq sauce from scratch...good stuff.

But, not being from Memphis, KC, NC, and SC....I certainly don't profess to be a master at it.

As a regular lurker of the TWMAC and current member in good standing of the church of low and slow. If anyone is ever in the Birmingham, AL area let me know and I'll share some home smoked BBQ. Cooked a 10lb brisket last weekend.

So what is it? Cookie or Candy?

I would have no idea about any of it had I been reading about Triple crown hopefuls. Had you asked two weeks ago I would have read about Tim Tam the horse.

USTA league sucks!! Playing the spring league right now and not having fun at all.

Question to you all, when a server is stepping on the line or into the no man's land, what to do about that?? The other team said it's perfectly fine to do so, unless there is a line judge, which the USTA league does not have.

Btw, played a 4.0 team last weekend, 5 peeps from the other team foot fault like crazy...

And I failed to understand why using Penn heavy duty balls, where 2/3 were dead right out of a fresh can...

If its before he makes contact with the ball that is a foot fault and not fine. So if there was a line judge he would not have foot faulted? Flagrant and Blant foot faulting is just like cheatin in my book.

In the grand scheme of things it probably doesnt not affect much. But I guess if they were S&Ving that extra step could make a difference.

Check USTA rules but Im pretty sure after a warning or two you can call them on flagrant foot faulting. If it does bother you that much call the captian over to handle it.

Also Penn balls are terrible.

ahh the footfaulting dilemma. i agree that it's pretty rampant. and i agree that it's cheating. but it's a for fun league with no real prizes to speak of. it don't bother me at my low level of play. i did read something funny in another thread about this. tell your opponent that he's foot faulting. if he argues that you can't see that from where you are - when it's your turn to serve. walk up to the service line and slam a serve. if he protests - tell him there's no way he can see you foot faulting from where he is. lol.

the dead penn balls sounds like somebody keeps cans in their trunk of their car at all times. maybe a cheap captain?

TimTams are 2 chocolate cookies with chocolate hazelnut creme in the middle and then dipped in chocolate. That's why I wasn't sure if you got it right or not, I'd probably have asked you to elaborate.

And ?, HW, and TM, footfaulting is a sin! Beat the people who sin against you like that!!!!!!

Anyone able to do a light warm up with me this afternoon??? Dats? dust off your frankenstein frames???

Also anyone have any opinions about Head Youtek Prestige MP's???

Is USTA in MD that bad? Me and TM had fun going up against a left and a mini-me version of Will Ferrell.

Foot faults. I find that most people who flagrantly foot fault suck, so I generally don't get too upset about it, but if it's bad you can warn them, then call faults after that.

A sad day for the X family; we said goodbye last night to a good dog with a huge heart. Inky joined our family in 1998, and she will be missed.
Here's a shot of her playing in the snow she so dearly loved.

Thanks fellows for the tips and suggestions. The other team that we played seems to have foot faulting issue throughout their entire team. They did, indeed, step-on/into no man's land before making contact w/the ball. And the sad thing was, none of their serves were that powerful, even with me 2.5 skills was crushing them. I did pointed out to them, but they weren't very happy about it. One of the guy I played against is the captain of the team.

He later pulled me aside and explained to me that there cannot be foot fault in this league w/o a proper line judge. What??

Well, with that said, I will never play on an USTA league again after this season. It just seems like a joke...at least in MD...

Sidenote, I went to see my friend's single's match...women's 3.5 league. Holy moly, a moon baller was a 4.0 in women's league?? But she couldn't play on a 4.0 league because she can't find one in Baltimore?? My friend crushed her in bagels...

ventured to ned and buz for some "real" bbq. once again i under estimate my eating capabilities by ordering only 1/2 rack of baby backs. that ish was fing delicious. meat was moist, the right amount of sauce so that it doesn't kill the pork flavor, nice hint of smokeyness comes out of every bite. as for the sides, the hush puppies were some of the best i've had but the beans were a bit too sweet for my taste and will avoid it next time. my other gripe is that they gave me an end piece of the rib, those always tends to be more dry.. i know some peeps enjoy that flavor of a slight burnt but i don't.. still that crappy end piece was better than anything i've had in DC... smokey bones or famous daves.

That captain doesn't know his *****:

USTA Comment 18.6: When may the receiver or the receiver’s partner call
foot faults? In a non-officiated match, the receiver or the receiver’s partner may call foot faults only after all efforts such as warning the server and attempting to locate an official have failed and the foot faulting is so flagrant as to be clearly perceptible from the receiver’s side

From the Code:

23. Foot faults. The receiver or receiver’s partner may call foot faults only after the server has been warned at least once and the request for an official has failed. This call should be made only when the receiver or receiver’s partner is absolutely certain and the foot faulting is so flagrant as to be clearly perceptible from the receiver’s side. The plea that a server should not be penalized because the server only touched the line and did not rush the net is not acceptable. Habitual foot faulting, whether intentional or careless, is just as surely cheating as is making a deliberate bad line call.

Hey HW....I'm getting the guts up to hit with you. You have me intimidated, so I'm going to do some hitting here in the OBX with a pro...and relax and destress from not having a vacation in almost a year.....

As for USTA...my first experience wasn't bad...but I've heard horror stories and am waiting....expecting....the bad things to happen. I'll be pleasantly surprised if things actually go well the rest of the season....

Anyone going to the Troy Park Tennis wine tasting thing on June 5th? Was thinking of going...and getting my firm to spring for tix.

Kinda figured you were headed this way. Coulda/woulda hooked up if it'd been possible. Oh well. Sorry you got stuck with the end piece. Not my favorite either. But glad you liked it. It's definitely the Best In Town.

On another (tennis) subject, was on-court tonight...and got a Big Win over some long-time friends/teammates in a (rare) match that meant something.
