My advice on returning a twist serve. First learn the basics of a service return. The first basic is recognition from the service motion or toss. If you know its going to be a twist, then react accordingly. Second, respond from the hit. When someone hits a kick or twist, it comes off the racquet a certain way. It even sounds different.. (think shank on purpose... all side spin). When you hear that shot react accordingly. Second, move your body into position. If you hear or suspect a twist coming, mover your racquet ready position up. Most rec players will always leave their racquets down on a return ready position. Expecting the flat but not adjusting for a second kicker. All of the above are early reaction stages. You may ask why. Cause the secret to returning a kick or twist is primarily getting to the ball early before it CAN twist or kick. Watch the pros, they step in on the second expecting it. No need to try to whack it, its a defensive return you are looking for. Sidenote: Even if you get to the serve, it will twist a bit before you can get on top of the tennis ball. So the secret to blocking or returning continues. If he/she is a lefty (like MrHan) exaggerate your aim more left. Thats a huge tip, as it enables you to get it back and with more control. For instance if MrHan is serving at me on the duece side (I'm a right hander)... If I want to hit it crosscourt on my return, I'm literally aiming for the doubles alley or half way to the fence depending on how severe my return angle should be. Just reverse it for a right. P.S. Last tip. Good kicks and Twist tempt people to muscle the return back. You must resist this notion. The best thing is to block or guide the ball. The serve is tricky enough to try to whack it and you have to pick your times and get used to the method of kick/twist you are getting. Alrighty. TFM, we will practice it if we go out for a hit. I usually stand at the service line with a bucket of balls and hit twist, kicks, flats.. all types of serves at you.

what is the difference between a kick serve and a twist serve? Apparently what i thought was a twist is not.
I'm not sure what kinda serve i hit, all I know is i try to put mad spin on it. when i hit em good they jump pretty high. is that good?

hollywood -- you got mail.
the semantics of the term twist serve and kick serve is sorta convoluted. a twist serve is also a kick serve but a kick serve is not always a twist serve. a twist serve is the tennis equivalent of a screwball. for a righty the serve is hit with both topspin and sidespin so that the ball will bounce and kick to the opposite side it normally would go. for a righty server it will jump to his right side. a kick serve often refers to a twist serve as well but mostly it refers to a serve that is hit with topspin so that it will bounce and kick forward. |

McLovin - Early hit next week? Maybe Monday or Tuesday? Say from 6am to 7am or 5:30 am to 7am?

Lightest to Heaviest: Dunlop, Penn, Wilson (US Open) Most Durable: Meh- they are all about the same - I think Wilson US Open last a little longer. Best Playing: I like the Penn and Penn ATP's - but they all bounce. Not a fan of Dunlops, as they seem to light or super-ball like - IMHO FWIW - I can check, but Costco had a case of 15 cans of Penn for about $30.

I played my first USTA match yesterday. I have played the Pusher style before, but this was a doubles match were one guy was pretty good. He had consistent ground strokes and a very consistent serve. The other guy lobbed every single ball hit to him where he wasn't at the net. I hadn't come across that before. It was nice to have so many overhead opportunities, but not so nice to miss so many! Double faults were my teams downfall though.
Is this lob style of play common in 3.0 doubles? This was my first real doubles match (beside the TWMAC ones of course). Looks like I'll be focusing on second serves and overheads in the coming weeks. |

Now at the women's level I've seen it and effective all the way up to 3.5 and I still see it at the 4.0 level. And the answer to why do they do that -- cuz it works. If it doesn't work - most sane people stop. |

Shcmad...are you okay? *concerned*
TFM...maybe I should work on my overheads with you as well? Never underestimate the power of a well timed and placed lob. If anyone wants to teach me how to hit one of those, please, feel free!
