If Blake injures himself before his 1st match, Querrey could play instead,

But not once it starts

Right. But the original post referred to putting Querrey in after Blake loses his first match.

I hope I can talk my wife into going. I went to the last final in America fifteen years ago. It may be another fifteen years before it comes back.

davydenko is 0-6 vs. blake and 0-4 vs. roddick so it is doubtful that russia will play him either.

that leaves russia with youzhny, tursunov, and safin. all comfortable on the quicker courts. given that tursunov and youzhny have both had more consistent results and are more focused that safin who at first is climbing mountains, then realizes "oh sh*t i might die. nevermind guys i was just messing around," i'm guessing its going to be youzhny and tursunov vs. blake roddick. imho, it can go either way. youzhny and dima, when they're on, they can beat anyone, and i mean anyone. same goes for blake. so it really depends on which guys show up to play and which guys just happen to be on the court at the moment. either way, should be fun.
I was thinking the Yanks might use a really fast indoor carpet court. I think the Americans are lucky the tie will be played in the States otherwise it would have been on the slowest clay imaginable. I give the Americans a 60/40 advantage.

I would be surprised if Safin plays anyway considering he's stated he will recover for next season. He won't be playing again this season.

But you know, the Americans have to choose something so this over emotional response about not choosing carpet won't do.

I just hope that Roddick and the bryan's do win their matches. I don't really know which Blake will show up to the final? Hopefully a network other than the tennis channel will show the finals!?

Fort Worth in '92 with the American dream team of Courier, Agassi, Sampras and John McEnroe?

I was at that final also!

I was in the nose bleed section for that one... literally in the very last row behind the court. I guess Andy Roddick was there for that one also, and the experience left an impression on his 10 year old mind that changed his life and made him want to be a tennis pro.

I hope I get better seats for this one in Portland, and that I can share it with my wife and son.

It's indoors. The weather doesn't matter.

LOL
I was not speaking of the weather as it relates to the match itself. My primary objection is the location regarding what you do the rest of the time over the weekend. See the poll/thread I linked.

I would like to see Querry play on the team, actually. And I think it might happen if Blake loses his first match. Roddick should win against any of the Russia lineup on Day 1, but if Blake loses on Day 1 put Querry in there on Day 3 after the US has a 2-1 lead. Of course, due to this being the final they may make Roddick play game 4.

Querry has pulled more upsets than Blake has this year, it seems
Won't happen. You are only allowed 4 players on a team and one practice partner. The practice partner is not allowed to play in any of the matches, even if there is an injury.

According to what I am reading in the Davis Cup rules, you are allowed to name 5 players to your team. Also, as far as I can see, you can have as many "practice partners" as you want.

Therefore, the scenerio where a player like Querrey or Isner is pulled into action to replace a non-performing Blake in the #3 doubles match is theoretically possible. Here is an example from last weekend of something like that happening:

http://www.daviscup.com/results/tier...?tie=100008926

Luczac and Hewitt play the singles on day 1; Hanley and Hewitt play doubles on day 2; Guccione and Luczac play doubles on day 3.

Here are the official Davis Cup rules:

VII. TEAM NOMINATIONS AND CONDUCT OF TIES

36. TEAM NOMINATIONS

(a) Each competing Nation shall at least 10 days before the date fixed for the commencement of the Tie, nominate to the Davis Cup Committee and to the opposing Nation without specifying which players shall play in singles and doubles:

- A team of a minimum of three and a maximum of four which shall include the nomination of a playing Captain; or

- A team of a minimum of four and a maximum of five which shall include the nomination of a non-playing Captain

Two nominations may be changed up to one hour before the Draw.

(i) Before commencement of the Draw each Captain shall give to the Referee the names of his two singles players in order of merit based on a world computer ranking accepted by the ITF as of the time for team nomination. Players with no computer ranking may be ranked by their respective Captain based on national ranking. After the Draw has been made, no variation may be made in the composition of the singles team for the first and second singles matches, except that the Referee may sanction the substitution of any player who has been withdrawn by the Captain for Team disciplinary reasons or who in his opinion, is incapacitated by illness, injury or other unavoidable hindrance. Any substitute sanctioned by the Referee as a result of the withdrawal of a player for Team disciplinary reasons must be selected from among the players nominated for the Tie and the withdrawn player may not compete thereafter in the Tie. (ii) A Captain may change the nomination of the singles players for the third and fourth singles matches on the following conditions: Notice of such change to the third singles match is given to the Referee at least one hour before the start of play of the third singles match. Notice of change with respect to the fourth singles match is given no later than 10 minutes after completion of the third singles match. If, one hour or less before the commencement of the third singles match, one of the players, in the opinion of the Referee, is ill or injured, the Referee may sanction the substitution of that player by another player nominated for the Tie. (iii) Any substitute nominated under section (ii) above for the third or fourth singles match must be selected from among the players nominated for the Tie and who has not competed in the first or second singles matches.(d) (i) Before commencement of the Draw, each Captain shall give to the Referee the names of the doubles team. A player who has withdrawn from the singles team due to illness, accident or other unavoidable hindrance, may be nominated for the doubles contest and for the third or fourth singles match under the provisions under (c) (ii) and (iii) above.(ii) A Captain may vary the composition of the doubles team provided that notice of such variation is given to the Referee at least one hour before the time fixed for the commencement of play in the doubles contest. (iii) If, one hour or less before commencement of play in the doubles contest, in the opinion of the Referee one of the players is incapacitated by illness, accident or other unavoidable hindrance, the Referee may sanction the substitution of that player, or both players of the team from among the players nominated for that Tie. (e) Before taking a decision as to the fitness of a player, the Referee shall request him to undergo an examination by an independent doctor, appointed by the Referee, who is to complete the form “ITF Medical Certification”, unless, in the opinion of the Referee, there is an obvious injury. (f) Where a player nominated by a Nation has been substituted for a player originally selected in any Tie without the sanction of the Referee, the player originally nominated shall not be eligible to represent his country in the next Tie whether in the current Competition or in subsequent Competitions and shall be subject to penalties set out in the Davis Cup Code of Conduct.(g)Any notice by a Captain under this Regulation must be given to the Referee in writing and the Referee will inform the opposing Captain as soon as practicable.

Portland is one of the best cities in the US and I have been to alot. Yes I live here, but there is TONS of stuff to do ranging from touristy crap to sipping a cup of the finest coffee roasted in north america (Stumptown).

You think Winston-Salem is gonna have better stuff to do? Is your other favorite sport NASCAR?
