Disclaimer: I am not a doctor nor do I profess to provide any diagnosis for any symptoms encountered by anyone who reads this.
Just wanted to pass this along… In early September I began taking Zocor because my cholesterol is a little high. Admittedly I should lose some weight. A few days after I began, I played pretty hard on consecutive days and pulled a back muscle. Didn’t seem too bad and it tends to happen to me from time to time. Next morning I could not get out of bed. It was the worst back pain I can remember. Over the next 2-1/2 weeks I had pain shooting everywhere and what normally takes a week to heal was no better. Right before leaving on vacation I searched the web and found that Zocor has a somewhat rare side effect that causes muscles to break down and joints to swell. I decided to stop taking Zocor. While on vacation in San Francisco I used self adhesive heat pads and even though I walked about 25 miles over 4 days and slept on a lousy bed my back was starting to get better by the time I got back home. That was 2 weeks ago and last night was the first time I could actually run, and not just shuffle, on the court. My back is not 100% yet, but I’m convinced that the Zocor had something to do with my recovery. I plan on checking back with my doctor pretty soon. John |

It is not a rare side effect at all and usually leads to cessation of the drug. Heat would not be a good idea in such an occurrence.

Talk to your doctor. You may want to do something else about your cholesterol. Eat right, exercise, lose weight, take some fish oil, and/or try Zetia, which my cardio guy recommended. -Robert

^^ wait, about how long after taking zocor did this happen ?? this particular side effect is called Myopathy, translated into muscle breakdown, or diseased muscle, in latin. but this side effect does not happen right away, it takes at least few weeks of taking it, you could experience this side effect. but if you say after you stopped taking it, you got better, it is highly likely it was the medication side effect. There are lab tests while on this drug, you can do to see if your muscle break down is actually ocurring or not. should have told your doctor. I am assuming you did get this from your doctor and not on the black market, right ???

To the OP it is impossible to say that your back pain is from Zocor or not based on your story. Back pain is not a common presentation of myopathy from zocor. You already admitted that you were playing pretty hard when you injured your back. You could simply have had an unrelated back injury that took longer than expected to heal. Talk to your doc about it. |

I got it from my doctor.
I have been borderline for a while and he finally convinced me to take Zocor, technically it was Simvastatin which is the generic. I hurt my back probably within a week or so after I began taking it. I don't think the medication caused the injury, but I do think it made it more traumatic and prevented my back from healing. I still took the Zocor for about 2-1/2 weeks after that and heat did not help, nor did rest because it seemed worse after I slept, even on my firm bed at home. I remember crawling up the stairs on the Thursday night I stopped taking Zocor because I couldn’t stand up straight. We left on vacation early Sunday morning and that is when I used the heat pads which helped some, but even on Tuesday I was still hurting because of a really soft bed. But over the next day or so it started getting better with heat. I've been taking it really easy and yesterday I played my first set. I feel pretty good today. I remember going out to hit some balls back and forth during this ordeal and I was basically immobile. Didn’t even consider trying to practice a serve. I just stood there and hit easy returns. John |

The problem is I do know about zocor and medicine that is why it is not funny and certainly would not be funny to a nonmedical person like umm... the original poster and 99% of people posting on this forum. I don't know about you but when somebody asks about prescription medicine and another person says I am assuming you did get this from your doctor and not on the black market, right ??? I start ROFLing, cause that just gets me every time. You are right that is true knee slapper. What was I thinking? |
