Default pre-stretching?

Can all you string experts out there please outline why you pre-stretch?

What are the benefits/disadvantages?

Which strings do you pre-stretch and why?

Just curious as I am hoping to buy my own stringer and I haven't seen any threads addressing this issue.

Thanks for any responses.

From what I've previously read on this matter, I think pre-stretching helps reduce tension loss. Some strings come pre-stretched while others don't. I guess for strings that don't come pre-stretched are the ones you have to pre-stretch yourself (that is if you want to pre-stretch them of course).

Would you care to educate me then as I have been through just about every page on this forum looking at threads and didn't see a single one addressing it directly.

I only pre stretch natural gut. Makes it easy to handle, reduces some tension loss and makes it more playable quicker than if its not pre stretched.

A common reason to pre-stretch is to remove some of the coil memory and make the string easier to handle when stringing. Since care must be taken with gut to avoid kinking the string while stringing some stringers says they always pre-stretch natural gut.
Pre-stretching some types of string may reduce some of the qualities that are desired in the string to begin with, e.g. softness, playability.

I only pre-stretch for someone I string for if they ask for it. For my own racquets I don't pre-stretch any strings I use including gut. I think overall it comes down to a matter of personal preference.

Thanks for a consice and informative answer. Apologies to Jorel for asking such a mundane question! I doubt there are many questions that have not been addressed before on a forum with so many posts.

there you go! all the info you will ever need haha. i personally like to prestretch to reduce coil memory, and with stretchy strings like a multi or some syn gut, it will reduce some initial tension loss.

Same here, we only pre-stretch when requested to. I find it takes some of the life (liveliness) out of the string. However, we only use CP machines here.
