I've heard good things about jumping rope for cardio fitness and footwork training, especially during the winter months. Should I go for a light or heavy rope to minimize chance of wrist / arm injury? What brand of rope would you recommend for a proper workout? Thanks!

Check:

I have always been told by coaches that jumping rope is the best thing you can do for your tennis game. I have a jump rope stocked away somewhere with all my equipment but forget the brand name. I would do with a lighter rope..with big wooden handles.

Jumping Rope is great for your tennis game and overall fitness. I have been using it as a training supplement for years. However here's what I have found over the years, by itself it's only OK. What I mean is that in addition to your tennis and jumping rope a good tennis training program should be more well rounded. Do not neglect aerobic training such as distance running or stationary biking even brisk walking, speed work such at sprints and or plyrometrics, strength training and stretching.
All this may sound like a lot to do but if done in small well balanced amounts the results can still be seen. If you have to, get a personal trainer to set up a program for you to get you started. Sample Jump Rope Workout for me. 2-3 times a week. This is fairly advanced so do not try the whole routine at first. Work your way up to it slowly. 1st set 100 jumps 30 seconds rest. 2nd set 200 jumps 30 seconds rest 3rd set 300 jumps 30 seconds rest. 4th set 400 jumps 30 seconds rest 5th set 500 jumps 30 seconds rest. Repeat the workout in reverse (10 set total) and your done. If pressed for time finish after the 5th set. 10 sets should take about 30 minutes or so 5 sets 15 minutes. Stretch your calf muscles in between sets. Good luck, Andy |

The best jump rope made is Buddy Lee's ropes. They are a plastic cord with a rotating head at the handles. He also has a book called Jump Rope Training. Both can be purchased from his website. I give them both 4.9 out of 5 stars. You get both and people will be asking you how to use a jump rope.
