Spinning "360" coitus in a zero-gravity chamber
(probably even better than underwater, "scuba-style" lol).

Better than underwater? I'll have to look into this. Scuba do-ba-doooo! Definitely NOT useless, DP.

We could lend you our space shuttle if you are willing to try out some controlled tests and submit detailed reports.

Have we been contacted already ?

"One possibility of an extraterrestrial beacon is a puzzling transient radio source some 26,000 light-years from Earth that was discovered in 2002 in the direction of the galactic center. It sends out radio waves in bursts lasting up to 10 minutes in a 77-minute cycle."

Wow, that wsn't useless. That was provocative, actually. A pretty hot button issue over here in the US.

Seriously, the possibilities are endless.....in prepping the landscape, instead of e.g, littering the floor with rose petals one could rent the air in a Zero-Gravity chamber with "stationary" champagne bubbles...chilly little "Brut stars" just sitting there waiting to be popped against the skin with a little 'sizzle' here....and a little 'sizzle' there.....

What do you do when you are uncomfortable? Like when you are anxious or angry?

Surströmming

AIRLINES BAN 'FOUL'
By Lars Bevanger
BBC News
Sweden's national dish is an acquired taste, to say the least.

Some say surstromming, a fermented herring, smells like rubbish left out in the sun for days.

But now the fish has been banned from several major airlines, classified along with dangerous weapons like shoe bombs and firearms.

The Baltic herring is fermented in barrels for months before being put in tin cans, where the fermentation process continues.

The decision has made many Swedes very angry indeed.

Surstromming is as Swedish as Volvo and Ikea.

Some say it is simply rotten fish, which smells like rotten fish. Others argue it is the finest of delicacies.

The French tennis player, Nicolas Mahut, who lost after over 11 hours of play at Wimbledon this year, is to be awarded the Ledion D' Honneur, as his effort beats the previous French resistance record of 6 hours 42 minutes set in May 1940.

That's pretty gross....along the lines of Iceland's "delicacy" Hakarl which is fermented (rotted) shark. Ummmm.....don't these drab little gray-cubes-of-heaven below just scream "YUM!" to you?? I was brave *stupid* enough to eat it once. Was offered to me while there years ago (you could see the locals quietly yukking it up in anticipation of the 'visitor' puking on the spot--but I survived getting it down....barely).

When going "herring" I'll opt for something 'normal' (i.e. pickled herring, vodka-crown-dill herring, svensk mustard herrinig, or smoked red wine herring salad<--yum, etc.) to go with some new potatos with butter and dill, dark bread and an ice-cold Karhu....and maybe a shot *or two* of Acquavit.

The useless info. part: Hakarl is fermented by digging a pit with gravel and burying the shark for months. Then they put it in a drying shack to 'finish it off', cut the brown crust that's formed, cut it into cubes and then "enjoy" it

The reason for the fermentation process is because that sharks in that region are the Greenland or "basking" sharks who 'pee' through their skin and thus have high, poisonous levels of uric acid in their flesh when "fresh" and again why they're fermented for months on end under gravel and rocks to squeeze the 'whizz' outta them. Hakarl's often taken with a local acqavit called Brennivin ("Black Death"). I'll take gravlax over gravel & rocks 'rot' any day of the week.

Hakarl is hatred in your mouth.

Harkarl is Bambi's mother getting shot.

interesting info, Dedans. Reminds me of Kimchi - heard of it, never had it. An Isreali-American colleague of mine used to say "we'll be in deep kimchi".

This is the most solid advice on kimchi that I have ever had the fortune to come across, by far.

Ironically, thanks to all his advice we did go deep into Kimchi later and the project was abandoned

FACT:

Pickled herring > pickled cucumbers > Kimchi > Surströmmin > Hakarl

USELESS INFORMATION:

I bought a jar of dill pickles imported from Poland today; one of these pickles might go well with a pickled herring smørrebrød.

MORE USELESS INFORMATION:

The first Soviet denunciation of Dmitri Shostakovich began in 1936. It is unknown when the global denunciation of Dmitry Tursunov's golf game began.

Kazakhstan will win Davis Cup within the next three years. You can bank on it.

Biggest rat ever ...

Watch out Heathcliff, there's a rat out there bigger than you. Or at least there was. Just a couple thousand years ago, the world's largest rat, weighing more than the average house cat, scuttled about what is now East Timor of Southeast Asia.
The skeletal remains of the robust rodent were found in a cave, researchers announced today. The excavations also turned up 13 other species of rodents, 11 of which are new to science, with eight of the rats estimated to have weighed more than 2 pounds (1 kg).
When alive, the giant of the bunch weighed some 13.2 pounds (6 kilograms). For comparison, a house rat weighs on average 5 ounces (150 grams). Today's heftiest rats weigh around 4.4 pounds (2 kg) and live in rain forests in the Philippines and New Guinea.
Carbon dating suggests the animal lived up until 1,000 to 2,000 years ago, along with most of the other Timorese rodents found during the excavations. Only one of the smaller species found is known to survive on Timor today, the researchers say.
"People have lived on the island of Timor for over 40,000 years and hunted and ate rats throughout this period, yet extinctions did not occur until quite recently," said study researcher Ken Aplin of CSIRO, adding that the arrival of humans to an area doesn't necessarily have to equate with extinctions. (CSIRO is the national government body for scientific research in Australia.)
"Large-scale clearing of forest for agriculture probably caused the extinctions, and this may have only been possible following the introduction of metal tools," Aplin said.
East Indonesia is a hotspot for rat evolution, Aplin said. In fact, each of the islands of eastern Indonesia evolved it own unique rat species. Aplin also has found six new rat species in a cave on the island of Flores.
