Competing USTA 2008
Advise Please
 I want to start competing in the USTA in 2008. Age 40s Can you guys give me some input? Do I just start at the first USTA tournament in Jan? Any Gotchas? Many tournaments say open to all USTA members and some annotate Ranked but still say open to USTA? FYI: Florida Thanks, TNT |

I'd get on a league team. In Florida, there are thousands and you shouldn't have problem finding one. Then try some weekend tournaments. Do you play at all? What level do you think you are?

USTA league play is far different from casual weeknite club play and will mirror USTA tournament play more so than your men's group. The pro you are taking lessons from should be able to direct you and also give you some idea about your NTRP level. Pros have not given actual, verified ratings, to my knowledge, in about 5-6 years. They may guide you about where you can self-rate yourself. I've never seen a USTA tournament with 2.5 men's division but maybe they have them in Florida. If not, enter at the 3.0 level. This will give you a good idea about where your leve of play fits in. Good luck and have fun.

I am partially through your predicament. I am in process of getting on a USTA league team. I would start by going HERE and choosing your region. Contact the coordinator who can put you in contact with a few team captains. While doing that, I would use the USTA standard self-rate which you can find HERE. Once on the USTA leagues, you can better establish your ratings for the 2008 season. Chris |
