these Gilbert threads always crack me up. I bet most posting here can't name more than 5 active pro tennis coaches, yet we are all full of suggestions for who he should coach. does that mean that Gilbert is the only great coach out there or that's he the only coach who holds press conferences after his players win a tournament?
Did fans really know much about the coaches of Borg, Lendl, Edberg, Becker back in the day? No, because they weren't attention *****s like Gilbert. No wonder he keeps getting fired, it must get kinda annoying for someone else getting credit when you do well. And remember Gilbert only coaches players with a LOT of $ (Agassi, Roddick, the LTA) so keep dreaming that he would ever coach an upcoming young player. Maybe if they win the lottery or something. |

When one looks at the ranking history of Andy Murray, it is difficult to ascertain the influence and benefit of his relationship with Brad Gilbert, and the effect on his career. Andy has been on a steady rise in the rankings (according to the ATP web site), and did not all of a sudden, take a huge leap when Gilbert came on board.
His progression was constant and steady...just not meteoric. What did Brad Gilbert really do for Andy Murray? I suspect that Andy would have continued to rise in the rankings, as a natural progression as a player and fulfilling his innate talent. The LTA got shafted. |

If Gilbert is such a great coach, then why does he continue to get fired by his players? This is not a rhetorical question. In his defense, I think he did help Murray raise his game to the next level.

Roddick said that Gilbert wouldn't be with him for long periods of time, just show up at events & say "let's just find a win to win today' etc, etc. Considering how often he is on talk radio, promoting books, products, etc, I wonder how much time he really spends with his players. That worked well with Agassi who had so many off-court interests as well, but most players are 24/7 tennis kind of guys. They like to have someone with them in-between events, during the off-season, etc. |

the only reason i would even want irksome gilbert to find another player to coach is to keep him out of the commentary booth. the less i see or hear of him, the better.

I agree, Blake is the best choice. Agassi dropped him because he learned all he needed to know. Gilbert probably ran out of things to say, if that's possible. Blake still has a lot to learn upstairs, and that's Gilbert's specialty.

To answer some questions about why roddick left gilbert. I got some inside info from people close to him. Roddicks father didnt want roddick to continue to pay gilbert. Also the lack of grandslam titles just fueled the fire. I believe blake would indeed benefit the most form gilbert however blake is way too stubborn with his coaching choice. Hes been with the same coach since he was a youngin and will not leave him for gilbert. Sad but gilbert could propel blake into the top 5 in no time. I think querrey will be a good match but he seems like hes not as motivated or hungry as most young talent. Young seems motivated and would likely transition to gilberts conservative thinker tennis with relative ease. Isner has a huge serve that and decent groundstrokes and would be a great palyer to coach as well. Too bad roddick wont get him back though.

I haven't read the posts in here yet but I think he should coach Blake, mainly because he's starting to drop in rankings and he's been with Brian Barker since he became pro. It's obvious that he needs a different voice and someone to help him become less one-dimensional, that go for broke style on every point would be something Gilbert would try to change. Roddick would be my second choice but I think he would just get mad at Brad all over again. He's at a stage in his life where he just needs to maintain his current level because no one will add new things to his game. Outside of them I can't see anyone else. Not Hewitt, Safin, Joker, Fed, Nadal, Davy, Nalby, etc. Brad sticks with native english speaking athletes. Mainly Americans.
