Default Perhaps time to boycott SI?

Can anyone tell me why SI is so popular in US? It seems to me that its one of most stupid sports mag i ever seen.

Luckily i'm not a subscriber or anything of SI, it makes me feel sick when they treat tennis like a piece of rubbish.

I don't read the magazine except when I am in America. The magazines I have seen were okay, especially the swimsuit issue. Did it report poorly on tennis recently?

I remember in the mid-90's SI called tennis 'dead'. I ended my subscription at that time.

Cheers,

Tim

Never given SI the time of day so I couldnt tell you how much it sucks.

I can tell you that outside of Football(mainly), Baseball, and Basketball the general population of the US dosnt know or care about other sports.

Pretty much all general sports magazines in the US treat tennis as an afterthought. It is understandable, tennis is pretty far down the list as the most popular spectator sports in the US. Even among recreational players, I know a lot that barely follow pro tennis. It you want tennis related news and topics you need a tennis specific magazine. People who subscribe to SI are into the mainstream sports (Basketball, football and baseball) so SI gives them what they want. Golf and soccer are also covered better than tennis.

OP, If you want to read about tennis, then subscribe to Tennis Magazine. SI is a BUSINESS. Tennis is not nearly as popular as Basket, Base and football. It comes no where near Nascar (which I hate) and does not touch Hockey nor Golf. Why would SI have tennis in it? Its not like the sponsors and advertisers are from the tennis world. SI has been around for over 60 years, so the OP post is ridiculous. Its not a stupid sports magazine...you are one of those typical haters of American culture.

Another MORONIC thread.

No offense to "American culture" but some Americans tend to be a little to self centered. There is a big world outside of US. =)

I don't get it. SI is an American magazine catering to regular American sportsfan. What's the problem? Should they include also cater to Greco-Roman Wrestling, Curling and Team handball fans too and watch their magazine subscriptions go down the drain?

I think SI has passed its time of being relevant.

There's a reason why they have to give away DVD's and sweatshirts to get subscribers.

Really, a sports weekly mag is only going to tell you what you already knew because you got your info instantly on the internet.

Here's a great Slate story about how horrible SI is now days: www.slate.com/id/2177143/

And I'm sure you know a lot about it, being just 17 & all.

SI is not a particularly popular magazine in the US btw. In the age of the internet/cable all sales of magazines/newspapers have declined.

In the 70s/80s there was no internet, there were no all sports tv channels, so SI served a valuable purpose(& actually provided great coverage of tennis)

I know many huge NFL/NBA fans who don't read SI, nor are aware of anything they do(the whole Sportsman of the Year thing is not a big deal at all, its hysterical to see so many here get upset about Federer being snubbed, when some of the biggest Tom Brady/Tim Duncan fans I know had no clue when they won that award)

Outside of airports, I wonder how many actually purchase SI at newstands. Probably much less than those that purchase Hustler.

SI was good years ago when it didn't have competetion. Now with the net and forums like this and specialized magazines no one needs it anymore.

Probably the only thing keeping it afloat is the swimsuit issue! Kidding aside, SI will publish what it deems necessary to publish to keep their subscriber base and be able to compete with the Internet. If you don't like the way SI covers tennis, just read a different magazine.

Did you subscribe to SI and found that it didn't meet your expectation? If so, no need to call for a boycott because they didn't cater to your wants. Try to get with their customer service department. They might refund your money. Come on, be honest. Did you subscribe?

And? I am NOT an American. I am a Canadian/Italian citizen. I live in the States, but my point is tennis is not important enough for SI. There are too many other popular sports. Has NOTHING to do with American's being self-centered. Oh, please ask the countless Africn countries that are assisted by the USA every day with food and medicine.

And SI does not represent America. Nor does Swank or any other magazine for that matter.

Most of it are Americans who never make the effort to travel and explore.
