Default Broken Tibia/Fibula

Unfortunatly, I have just suffered a broken Fibula and Tibula. It happened during a basketball practice. My question is, what can i do for rehab once it gets out of the cast. Also what are some other exercises/wieght lifting things that you can do while having an almost full leg cast? Thank you and all help is appreciated

The tibula and fibula are two bones in your lower leg. The tibia is the thick one, the fibula is the skinny one.

Sorry to hear that. Get ready for some intense itchiness during the healing process. Did the bone snap or was it a hairline fracture? The former is a lot more serious and happens often to Muay Thai fighters, but you'll be glad to know that just about everyone makes a full recovery. Try some calf raises both seated and standing when you're out of your cast. You can also put a light dumbbell on top of your foot and flex upward. Good luck with the recovery.

Well it has been about 2 weeks with the cast. Another 4-6 to go. I go to the doctors on Tuesday, so hopefully I can hear some good news. I also have another question. How long will the rehab for this take before I can be in tennis shape? Because my high school tennis season starts in 5-6 weeks and I would love to be able to play most of the season. Thank you all so much for your help!

Remember the reciprocity principle. Athletes who continued to work their good leg -- while the break was healing on the bad leg -- experienced much less atrophy.

How'd you do that, anyway?

I broke it at my high school basketball practice. I slid into get the ball, ran into an opposing player, and bam.

How bad were the frx's (fractures)? Tib/Fib is a very common frx. They usually go together. Tib & femoral (femur) frx's are awful, because they are the only 2 load-bearing bones in the body.

Did they put a nail in the tib, and plate & screw the fib? Or did they just screw the fib?

The good news was they didnt need to open my leg up. They said that all they needed to do was put me under to straighen the bones.

Must not have been a full break. When I had mine, they gave me the option of 6 months in a cast (which might fix it - doctors words) or surgery. I took the surgery and was walking in two months. However it took 18 months before the pain stopped bothering me when running.

Well tomorrow is the big day. From the surgery, I had a full leg cast for a month. I then had a cast up to my knee, but cut down in the back so I could bend it. Tomorrow they will take it off and do some X-rays to see how it looks. I am really hoping that I will be able to walk( or more limp ) out of the doctors. My high school tennis season starts in 2 weeks, so I am hoping to only miss a couple weeks of the season. Our team will be very good this year, and I play a high varsity position so I am hoping to have a speedy recovery. Thanks to all who gave great advice

Glad the recovery's going well. Your leg must have been itching like crazy. Any time you have a fracture, the healing site experiences intense itchiness.
