Here is the thing, if he truly is a 14 year old that is a 4.5- 5.0 NTRP rating, he would be winning the majority of his matches with ease. So, even playing a couple of tournaments would get you a good amount of points.

He probably just hasn't seen any 4.5 players hit yet, the way they described a 4.5 player could mean anyone.
Of course, everyone else on this board DOES know what a 4.5 player looks like |

I especially agree with what raiden said. Think the self-rate give you an idea where to begin be competitive and then from there your success or lack there of shows how accurate you were.

check out the USTA site. they hav the rating system. find what u think is ur rating, then drop it by 1 to 1.5 or more levels. more accurate that way. i.e, if u think ur 5.0 material according to that chart, then ur probably closer to 3.5 - 4.0.

really, have a pro do it. ratings also depend on where u live. a 4.0 in one part of the country might be better/worse than a 4.0 in another |

I kind of get the opposite impression when reading these boards. There seems to be a lot of threads talking about people self-rating lower than their actual ability and sandbagging the USTA leagues. I signed up for a USTA card online and went through the questions which leads to self rating. Based on my answers to the questions I self-rated a 3.5. I entered a local 3.5 league and won the league by 30+ games so I will be playing in the 4.0 league in the spring. But having said that, I have not played in any tournaments and I imagine the competition at 3.5 would be greater in tournaments with points at stake. I bet there would be some sandbaggers there as well...

Yeah this self-rating thing is way off. My coach is a 5.0 or so, and I get beat 6-1, 6-0 and he only plays at 50%. Yet according to the self-rating, we should be equal competitors.

I have seen in tennis magazines before where coaches travel the country and hold "rating" clinics or seminars. The USTA would probably be involved, so check with them. They would know where to guide you.

People who actually know their level by playing against rated players will purposely self-rate at the lowest level possible. But people who don't but are just estimating their ability based on the descriptions usually overrate themselves. I think thats probably more common of teenagers who aren't eligible to play in the NTRP leagues.

well mitsuki that would be because you are from hawaii. in california there are many good high school players in the 4.5-5.0 range. there are about 7-10 in all of the islands of hawaii.

We have some good players here too. 5 of our varsity players are national contenders. Don't underestimate us.

when people look at these lists, they just read the descriptions and say 'yeah i have a lot of power', 'yeah i can put away volleys' yadda yadda yadda. some of these people are really what they say, but others are complete loudmouths.

NTRP means nothing as the result of self-evaluation. However, it means even less on an internet message board... lol.

I feel I'm in the 3.5-4.0 range. I'm playing a tournament for the first time in monthes, and I just won my first round 4-6 7-5 10-7 (third set is a 10 point tiebreak) at the 3.5 level.
