My friend and I are in an argument. I think that people use soap before shampoo when they take a shower but he disagrees. What do you do?

I shampoo and condition my hair first (it's almost down to my wasit now) and put my hair in a shower cap so that it can deep condition while I do everything else. Everyone is different, there are no rules for this. You and you friend should argue about US foreign policy or something more important.

I shampoo first and condition last.

Who cares? Personally I like to shampoo up and then soap while the shampoo soaks in.

Everyone who's anyone knows you're supposed to shampoo first, so that your hair is more dry by the end of the shower.

Well then I guess I learned wrong... I always soap first, then shampoo. Of course, I have curly hair, so I don't always shampoo when I shower.

What does having curly hair have to do with shampooing?

I shampoo first... I always shower after swimming and think that if I use soap and wash my body, and then wash my hair, all the chlorine will just negate my previous washing.

I have fair skin, so I don't really have to bathe at all.

Curly hair is usually much more dry and doesn't need to be washed as often. The texture is part of it (curly or kinky hair is more easily damaged), but it's also because the hair is not lying flat against the head, so oil from the scalp doesn't transfer onto the hair. In addition, when hairs are more straight, the oil is wicked up between the hairs down the length of the hair shaft.

I know, I have curly hair and it's very dry and coarse at the ends, but shampooing is determined by the dirtiness of the scalp (more so for men, it seems). My husband rarely lets his hair get to the second day without shampooing it and I'm pretty sure he would fall into the 'normal' hair and scalp category. I guess I just thought that all men shampooed their hair every day, but that would be generalizing the entire population based on the ones that I grew up with (not very enlightened of me I suppose).

I start with shampooing my hair. I then put the conditioner in it to let it sit for a few minutes while I use body wash, then soap, then a quick shave, then I rinse the conditioner out.
