Rest it it up.
Ice it for the first 48 hours.
Use an ace bandage - or in this case, maybe some compression shorts to provide some compression.

Standard practice is: if something is painful / not normal: seek medical advice

Most often they proscribe:
R-I-C-E

Rest
Ice (1st 48 hrs - some medical professionals allow up to 72 hrs)
Compression (support but not to constrict blood flow)
Elevate

Depending on severity (they may have you keep it wrapped tightly for a week or so) - Always get a trusted medical professional to do this - there is a great deal of skill required to determine what is too tight especially with concerns that swelling may increase the potential of a tournequet effect (bad)

later on they may also recommend alternating heat and cold therapy

best practice is getting a recommendation / fitting for a brace that could prevent future injuries..

Didn't have problems until a couple years ago .. from bad shoes .. everything is fine with brace on during matches ..

on top of what has already been posted, prescription anti-inflammatories on short term use has been known to speed up recovery. this is provided that you don't have stomach Ulcers and heart problems like hypertension, chronic heart failure. but usually short term use does not cause complications. you can ask your primary Doctor and see what he thinks about short term anti-inflammatory use.
