Default Grand Prix winners.

Does anyone has the info of the Grand Prix winners (and final positions), played along the 70's & 80's? It would be very helpful to me.
Thank you.

Default overall grand prix winners

here's list for the 1970s

1970 richey
1971 smith
1972 nastase
1973 nastase
1974 vilas
1975 vilas
1976 ramirez
1977 vilas
1978 connors
1979 mcenroe

The grand prix rewarded playing as many events as possible. hence some of the winners. Borg never played many grand prix events, except in 1973.

according to the itf website, these were the seedings for the masters from '82-'84(the Grand Prix rankings were used for seedings at this event)
I don't know if the standings changed after the masters was over.
Interesting that Wilander finished '83 #1 in the race.

1984

1. McEnroe
2. Connors
3. Lendl
4. Wilander

1983

1. Wilander
2. Lendl
3. McEnroe
4. Connors

1982

1. Connors
2. Vilas
3. Lendl
4. McEnroe

Jeffrey, do you know if all events(WCT, ATP) gave Grand Prix points in the 70s/80s?

Here were the rankings for 1981, guess this shows how little Borg played in his final year on tour:

1. Lendl
2. McEnroe
3. Connors
4. Clerc
5. Vilas
6. Borg

moose,

regular WCT events counted towards the Grand prix from 1978-81.
Otherwise it was a separate circuit approved by the ATP, except in 1982.

top 5 finishes in grand prix
1975 1977
vilas vilas
orantes borg
borg gottfried
ashe orantes
nastase cibbs

Andrew, thanks for your posts, I've been asking these questions here for years, its great to get the answers.

Do you know if those standings you listed were updated after the Grand Prix Masters, or are they just the top finishers before the event was played? Because I have the 1982 Masters final on tape, & the commentators mention the top 8 qualifiers, which correspond with what you posted for that year, but they don't update the standings after the event. I imagine Lendl would pass Vilas if they did, do you know if the Masters offered any Grand Prix points? Because I also have matches from the '89 Masters final on tape, & it appears as though they do update the standings after the event(Edberg got 850 pts for winning it)

I have several matches from the '89 Masters on tape, & they do a points breakdown for players that includes Grand Prix points earned at the Dallas WCT event in '89. Did Dallas give Grand Prix points in other years in the '80s?

The Grand Prix Masters was the name of the Masters Cup from '70 to '89. The Grand Prix points(similar to race points today, I think) they earned throughout the year determined the field for the Masters. here is the event history:

Good questions. Firstly I dont know if the early Masters tournament did have points but I have to further look into that. I think that the points were added in the late-eighties.

WCT events after 1985 were included in the Grand Prix Calendar. In 1985 these were the WCT Finals in Dallas, the Tournament of Champions in Forest Hills and two WCT-run Super Series events in Atlanta and Houston. The WCT tour effectively ended in that year.

It is amazing how the first 20 years of open tennis really was a mess and the relative stability of the ATP Tour now is so different to the early 1970's.

I have Gottfried second with 1548 points compared to Borg at third with 1210 points. Vilas was the leader with 2047 points, while Connors just scraped in with 722 points at No. 8 but then went on to defeat Borg in the Masters final that year.
