ok here's my story,
so i've bought and ordered a pure drive roddick plus and im goin to get it stringed properly. i've played tennis on and off since i was little but im taking it seriously now. i know im defo going to get pro hurricane tour for the mains, and i was looking at vs gut for the crosses, both 16g, but when i went to my local tennis centre, and looking through these forums, i found that they are not durable and need replacing frequently. i want to know if anyone can suggest a string, preferably babolat, that will be as close to vs gut, 16g, but last for as long as possible. are any of the synthetic guts good? cheers for ur responses guys. much appreciated. Babolat VS will last much longer than those polys will, Pro Hurricane Tour will be completely dead before the VS even starts to lose its feel.

Babolat VS might BREAK more quickly than polys, but most people will tell you that polys are only good for 20 hours tops and then they'll feel like absolute dog doo after that.
What level are you at right now? You might not wear it out as quickly depending on your level.

as i said im only taking it seriously now. my current racket (until monday =)) is the old pure drive and i only had the standard strings on there. ive had that racket for years.
so i guess you could say i havent got a rating yet, but im getting a personal trainer and lessons, so hopefully ill be getting there. ill prob get the tension to around 60-63 lbs cheers |

Full gut is an excellent choice. I was finally smart enough to man up and shell out the cash for an all VS job and it's worth every penny. It frays like crazy but I haven't broken it yet, just replace it every few months or so and you'll be fine.

However, it IS a rather expensive thing to test out, my advice to you would be to find a gut you like a stick with it. No point in trying anything else if you've already found your holy grail.

VS Team Gut is 17g, VS Touch Gut is 16g. So you are correct, Team is slightly thinner.

VS Touch is also available in 15L, which would obviously last longer than either the 17g or 16g mentioned earlier. You did mention you wanted something 'durable' and going to a thicker string would do that. I've played with all 3 of these gauges and 15L plays great (IMO it is superior to any sort of synthetic and I have played with most top end synthetics)

15L means 15 light. It is thinner than 15g but thicker than 16g.

If I'm not mistaken strings can vary from 15-20g, 15 being the thickest and 20 being the thinnest.
I know, it seems backwards.

You should give Babolot Tonic gut a try...thinnest is 16g, IIRC.
It's significantly less expensive than VS. |

That's right. Natural gut usually don't last as long as poly's but they will retain their tension and everything else pretty well. They will usually fray before breakage too. As for Hurricane...those don't break, ever. They do feel dead in a couple hours though...but hey how can you tell anyways? They ARE dead to begin with.
I find out that going full Natural Gut, full synthetic, or full poly is better. I'm not into hybrid since either my main or cross will break anyways. Hybrid doesn't make my strings last longer. |
