Default College Club Nationals

Just throwing this out there to see if anyone on the boards is going to the College Club team nationals in Cary, NC. Should be some good competition, every team brings at least a couple varsity level players from each division. Good tennis to watch if you are in Cary as there shouldn't be anyone much worse than 4.0-4.5 playing.

alright i've been inspired by drakulie. there will be at least 3 different facilities involved so it wont be nearly as comprehensive as his 45's tournament thread and there will be many more 4.0's mixed in with many fewer 5.5's but I'll try to photograph and video as much as I can.

there are actually a lot of schools involved. I am from San Diego and most of the schools in your area would probably have a team although some are more dedicated than others. I am now at University of Mary Washington playing in the N bracket so i will be at the same courts as you, D2TS on Thursday. We are probably the smallest school there.

hey, if you win your pool you'll be playing us in the first round (assuming we win ours too) and for whoever said they didnt think their school had a club team, its not that hard to start one, just have some regular practice times, get the word out to as many players as you can and sign up for some tournaments. SMU didnt have a club team till last year when some freshman just decided to form one, and they went to nationals that year

The beauty (and drawback if you have a big team) of World Team Tennis format is you only need 2 guys and 2 girls to have a team, so forming a club at your school is not difficult at all.

We've had a club hear at SU for a while now, but just last year did we start getting serious and playing anyone outside about a two hour drive from here.

By the way - to whoever asked about starting a team - there are teams all over the country, though some areas (like the *******) seem to be more into it than others.

The level of play is a lot higher than most people out of high school expect, too. You'll find a lot of kids who played #1 or 2 for their respective high schools who expect to roll through club tennis, because they think all the good players play varsity somewhere. A lot of those kids have trouble just making our travel team.

From what I've seen, the quality of play is 3.5-4.5 for girls and 4.0-4.5 for guys on good college club teams. 5.0's are rare, but they're out there, too.

Not that I really care, but why did they just asterisk the region of play within USTA I wrote as if it were a curse?

I'm the coach at Minnesota - played the last three years at nationals and I'm excited to be back tomorrow.

d2ts - if you haven't been to nationals before, I think you'd be surprised how many 5.0s are there.

Totally agree. Texas and Wisconsin have some amazing players.

I've been really unimpressed with wisconsin at this tournament. they just barely won their pool (btw, virginia got screwed over getting put in wisconsin's pool) and only won their first round match by one game, texas should kill them in the semis

and as to the level of play, if you've won a match (or even kept it close) in the gold bracket your a 5.0, there might be one or two 5.5s. the lowest level at the tournament is probably 4.0 with a few exceptions

I had a great time this weekend. Excellent tennis and good times. We (Syracuse) did really well for ourselves, too. 12th overall, including wins over Texas Tech, Harvard, Central Michigan, and UC-Davis.

However, I was really disappointed in A&M walking out on the award ceremony after their 3rd place award. Classless.
