Default Pete Sampras and 2009 Davis Cup

Aloha!

How many of you would vote to have Pete Sampras play singles during the 2009 Davis Cup competition? Just think: Pete would have to play just ONE singles match every couple of months or so and not have to endure the rigor of a typical two-week grand slam event.

As much as I like Sampras, he's just too rusty and inconsistent to compete at a high level. Even though Federer praised Sampras for how well his game has held up, it's nothing more than an act of respect.

If he could beat Roddick and Blake on a consistent basis then I would say why not.

There's a 10 character minumum for posting. The forum won't let you type anything shorter so users have started adding "10 char" to fill space.

let the guy retire. hes played enough tennis that him showing up every once and a while at exibihtions and team tennis is enough. he has nothing left to play for and was smart to get while his body was still intact. so many of these guys wake up with pain every morning cause of the pain the tour takes on you.

don't disgrace your idol.
posts like this won't help your idol, but put him in disgrace.

why not ask Rod Laver to play for Australia.

DC play is of much higher intensity and rigor than normal ATP play not to mention best of 5. Heck, even some dead rubbers are epic.

Let Sampras be, US tennis isn't so bad that they have to bring back their retired legends, hell they're only DC defending champs.

He won't play so there is no point of voting.

Hmmm. Interesting remarks.

We must remember that in recent months Sampras BEAT Federer and took him to a very tight third set match at MSG just a few weeks ago. I agree there is a HUGE difference between a best of three sets "hit-and-giggle" exhibition dance compared to a best of five Davis Cup match. However, if the conditions are just right (on US soil, FAST indoor surface, Sampras healthy, etc.), there is no reason why Sampras could, but not necessarily should, still win at the highest level even if it’s just once in a great while.

I agree that what’s left of Sampras’ talent, ability, athleticism and even motivation are quite perishable and it is highly unlikely we will be having this debate this same time next year.

Thanks again and take care,

What would be the point? He'd have more to lose than to gain, we have plenty of good US players (Roddick, Blake, Fish, Querrey) So even if someone got hurt, this would make no sense.

No offense, but:

Roddick + Blake + Fish + Querrey = 1 Grand Slam Singles Title
Sampras = 14 Grand Slam Singles Titles

I'm not the biggest Sampras fan and even while he was playing didn't think so much of him. However, he found a way to juice every single bit of talent he was given and found ways to win whereas too many of today's players just don't get it (and most likely won't).

Thanks again and take care-
