Take a guess at the age of your teammates. What's the average age, would you say?
Eyeballing my roster, I'd say my current ladies 3.5 team has an average age of about 47. I have one woman who is 32, another who is about that age, and one in her high 30s. I have several who I know to be over 40, and then there are a lot who are mid-40s. I'd say this 3.5 team is on average about 5 years older than last year's 3.0 team. Hmmm . . . On my mixed doubles team with TFM, I'm going to guess the guys averaged 35, but the women averaged considerably older, perhaps 48? The youngest woman is about 32, but most of the rest of us were high 40s into the 50s. Just a wild stab in the dark, though . . . On my 3.5 team, however, I wouldn't say the younger players are stronger players necessarily.

Best Guess for a Men's 4.0 Team
Youngest ~ 35 Oldest - 64 (I know this because he reminds us all the time.) Average ~ 50 About a third of the team also play on a Senior Team, so they have to be at least 50.

I'm guessing that on my regular Men's team the average is about 45.
On the Senior team it's about 55. |

Let's see here:
Women's 4.5 Team Youngest - 22 Oldest - probably about 60 My sister and I are the youngest at 22 and 28 but the rest of the team I would guess are in there 40's with the exception of our 60 year old player. So our average is probably in the low 40's. Both of my mixed teams probably average about the same, we have a few more younger people but we also have several older people so we probably average out in the low 40's. |

Since I've started playing USTA (last four years) I've always been the youngest on my team...and I'm 33 now.

I had always been the youngest on my team until I recruited my sister.
Unfortunately b/c of her I'm no longer the youngest or the go to singles player! Nah, just kidding she helps us out tremendously, when she steps on the court to play singles we know we have it in the bag, unless she were to get injured or something. |

I have, since I've started, been 'groomed' for singles by one of my captains, but I enjoy playing both (though I'm starting to lean more toward singles these days). But as Cindy said above...the younger ones aren't necessarily the better players...that holds true for all of my teams as well. I'm trying to change that though!

I'm the oldest, on my 3.5 team -- 45. I think the average is about 35-37.

Hmm, my 4.0 team I'm the youngest (33) and another is 34, after that it's all between early 40's and early 60's. I'd put the average at about 46.
My wife's 3.0 team is about the same, she's the youngest (30) by a decade with most of the women in their 40's and 50's.

On our team this year we have a mother/daughter doubles team. The daughter is 19. Despite the outlier, I'd guess our average age, and certainly our median age, is around 50. This is a 3.5 adult league team. (And yes, our corresponding senior team is pretty awesome.)

I would say most people not only on my team but whom I play against in leagues would be over aged 45 and probably the average is 50. I don't know if I've even seen someone that was younger than me (27), but I've seen a few in their 30s.

my men's team -- average age i'd guesstimate at about 45.
my mixed team -- average age i'd say maybe slightly higher 47 a few years back played on a mixed team and i'd say our average age was 30. sometimes looked like college kids playing the local retirement home. |

Well, I was the oldest (45) until we got a 4.5 bumped down on our team that is around 60? Our average is around 30 or so.

If I were a marketing consultant for USTA, I'd be alarmed by these high average ages for league tennis. I wonder what gives?
As I look back on my 20s to late-30s, I was *way* too busy with school, then work, then kids to even consider a hobby that requires three hours bare minimum for each outing. Not to mention that it is a hobby where you get your head handed to you if you lack money for instruction or time for practice. I would think that something I couldn't have tolerated for long when I was younger -- or even now!

Interesting side note - I would guess that the average 'singles' age in the league is lower at 4.0 than at 3.5 but that the opposite is true for doubles.... not really surprising...

I thought I was the youngest on my 4.0 team but that title goes to someone in their early 20s. From the players I've seen on my team, the age frames from early 20s to late 40s with the majority of players in their mid to late 30s.

Our singles players are in their late 20s-early 30s, avg=30
Our doubles players are in their mid 30s-late 40s, avg=40 So, our distribution is bi-modal on multiple USTA teams. |
