ESPN - A group from Oklahoma City has agreed to buy the NBA's Seattle SuperSonics and the WNBA's Seattle Storm.
As. Press - Supersonics were officially sold to Oklahoma City businessman Clay Bennett yesterday. Apparently, they'll start playing as soon as they can get rid of the two-years contract with the Key Arena. Seattle is sueing the team to force the Sonics to stay in the city until the contract expires in 2010, while Bennet wants to pay to null the contract. The trial starts june 16th. Shocking news.

Here are some other details:
Emails were leaked that showed Bennet and his cronies never meant to keep the Sonics in Seattle: "Is there any way to move here [Oklahoma City] for next season or are we doomed to have another lame duck season in Seattle?" Ward wrote. Bennett replied: "I am a man possessed! Will do everything we can. Thanks for hanging with me boys, the game is getting started!" One of the people associated with Bennett also was quoted along these same lines, saying something to the effect of "We never intended to stay in Seattle." Owners just voted for the move to Oklahoma City 28-2, with Dallas and Portland against it. Recently the previous owner, has stated that he will sue Bennett for not giving a meaningful attempt to stay in Seattle as was the goodfaith terms. Basically, the plan for the city is to force Bennett to stay another 2 years, and then, within that time, find someone to buy the team back. |

Very unfortunate and very stupid of the NBA. Trading the Seattle market for Oklahoma City(?) because taxpayers wouldn't fork over the cash for more luxury boxes.
I hope the plane with the owner crashes and burns upon hitting the runway of the O.C. "international" airport.

I had the brew she had the chronic The Lakers beat the Supersonics Yeah, I remember those battles between the Lakers and the Payton/Kemp Sonics. I hate the Sonics, but I respect them like I do the Jazz or the Jailblazers. They truly represent their cities. The Sonics had been a fixture of Seattle longer than the Mariners and the Seahawks.

I used to love this game. A lot. Not any more.
There is something fundamentally wrong with the sport when you can move teams like this or fix PO series in order to maximize the profit. NBA = WWF. I just can't watch that crap any more. |
