Spoiler ???

Anyone watching the Hamburg Open ?

Pablo Cuevas, qualifier, sweet backhand, and courageous chap too.

His matches with PK and NickyMag were great viewing for 1hbh lovers. Wonderful exchanges, bh passes, drives, angled shots, winners etc.

Congrats to all Fed fans regarding the twin daughters: Charlene Riva and Myla Rose.

Not a bad week for the one handers with victories in Lyon and St Petersburg.

Federer will be back in Basel ...

Three-time defending champion Roger Federer makes his first main draw appearance since the US Open this week at his hometown tournament, the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel. World No. 3 Novak Djokovic makes his debut at the ATP World Tour 500 event, while Fernando Gonzalez - a contender for a Barclays ATP World Tour Finals berth - attempts to reclaim the indoor title he won in 2005.

5. Backswing: The smile pattern for the backswing is what takes the racquet back a bit farther and allows the racquet to rise in preparation for the racquet drop. The higher you raise the racquet the better skilled you will need to be for your timing. More is not better for a onehanded backhand due to the timing issues involved in the stroke. Simplicity and timing is what is better.

This is where I am at currently . I am doing better if I keep the racquet low through my whole take back and beginning of swing (instead of the racquet head being higher up on the take back. Im not getting any better ... When I play with my 2 handed back hand I am a 4.5 player and I have a group I play with that are mostly 3.5 . So when I hit the ball machine and practice the 1 handed back hand I do very well . But when I play with them the ball is all ways loopy and high or to short . I get crazy slices that are really low all the time. Just all over the place. Do you think this kinda practice will add to me not getting better on my 1 handed back hand?

Well, I'm going to have to give the same generic "there is no best grip" response that you probably don't want to hear. You can't just look at one of the best backhands in the world and conclude that his grip is the best for you. There are some elements of Gasquet's backhand that should not be copied by the average Joe, like his loopy, monstrous backswing, for example.

That being said, Gasquet's normal grip (most pros adjust a little bit based on the height of the incoming ball) is a little past full eastern, but not full on SW like Henin, or at least from what I've seen.

Glad you read that. I was worried that no one would look at the first page anymore. Remember that the ball machine gives you more or less the same bounce every time, so your footwork will not be under the gun as much as when you are playing a real player and you are forced to adapt to different bounces, spins, etc. Ball machine training has its place, and helps to ingrain proper technique, but against a real player your feet need to work a lot harder to keep the ball in your strike zone.

Good to see you're still trying (with little success) to revive this thread, Sent. Have you hit the courts at all, or are you still sidelined with your injury problems?

P.S. I was rooting for Murray (oh, snap)!

No 17 this time, but nice to see Schiavone hitting amazing one-handers on her way to winning the French Open for women.

Count me in, I've had a one-hander for a few years but it hasn't gotten to be particularly versatile and beautiful until recently

I've started with a one-handed backhand because that's the only one my coach knew. Which is very lucky because I've had other coaches in public classes with coaches who clearly could not hit it, as well as some of the videos on the internet now-a-days show poor one-handed backhand technique.

I'm in.

Been playing the OHBH since I was twelve. I actually begged my coach for about a year until he finally caved. It was definitely difficult at first, especially from the strength side.

Now I am 26, and it is one of the best decisions I have made in my tennis life. The feel of striking a clean OHBH down the line is probably my favorite shot in tennis.

My favorite players (male and female) have always been one handers.
