Default ATP Annual Awards Announced

And you can tell I'm happy about one of them.

i think its realistic. Federer was better than roddick..but roddick had that hard court run so thats why he won..plus all the hype. I have to say im surprised federer won fan fav. I voted for him on a bunch of comps but i didnt think itd get that high. And coria finished 5th..no safin in top 5? thats really weird....

The reason Roddick won is because he won the Champion's Race. The ATP can't very well market it as the race to determine who is No. 1, crown the guy the Race champ and then pick someone else as Player of the Year. It would totally undermine the significance of the Race.

I doubt very much they will annoint anyone Player of the Year other than the Race winner, unless of course, they scrap the race.

Well, I guess they sort of had an obligation to Roddick, since he won the race, even though he won by a nose! If Federer had one one more match or whatever the difference was, he would be undisputed as the player of year, since he won wimby plus the master's cup.

I don't enjoy Andy's game but he did win the No.1 spot legitimately and deserves to be the player of the year. Roger blew his chance away in Montreal and has no one else to blame for. Himself said many times that Andy was the best player last year and a deservingly no.1. It is hard to justify not giving the player of the year award to the No.1 player as Susan said.

Besides I think Roger will be thrilled to win the fans' favourite award.

And as you will recall, Ferrero was in the running as well, and blew his chance, too. It really was a three-horse race, and it was close. Lots of debate can happen about who was best, and we've been through this debate before, talking about who won TMS titles, who did the best in GS events, who made the most money, etc., but the ATP chose the person they had to. If JC or Fed had won the Race, they would have gone with that guy. IMHO.

And I really think Fed will win it this year hands-down. Unless he gets injured or something. Last year, Andy, Juan-Carlos, Roger, Guillermo and others were still feeling their way on the Tour. They are now the legitimate forces, and Fed has a huge early lead. One that will be difficult for anyone to surmount. So I do think Fed fans will be rewarded this year.

Gosh, I'm being so politically correct here, it scares me. But I like Federer, and love watching him play, so it's pretty easy.

Roger will most likely be 2004 year ending #1. Unless his form completely plummets of course. Not impossible to rule out...but not likely.

Simple enough: Roddick was the better player over Federer in 2003. That's why he was ranked year-end No. 1 and that's why he is ATP Player of the Year. Federer wins the consolation prize, Fan Favorite. If Federer keeps his hot streak he'll be Player of the Year for 2004, so all you anti-Roddick Fed fans can keep the roar down, k?

Schuettler over Coria for Most Improved. That's ..... interesting. Poor Schuettler is going nowhere fast this year.

Well Schuettler more or less came out of nowhere, whereas Coria was expected to do big things. Plus, Schuettler reached a slam final while Coria only reached a semifinal. The German also had like 71 match wins. That's why he got the edge and the nod, IMO.

For the record, I see it going both ways. But I'm not bummed that Coria didn't get it and Schuettler did.

He's lucky he still got the most improved award considering how 2004 has been for him.

sure, but his 2004 performance has no bearing on him getting an award in 2003 or not. It has no relevance....it just doesn't matter.

Funny how your post always sounds bitter. Consolation prize? Weird thing is that whether Andy wins the player of the year or not, most players or tennis reporters had given Federer the approval who is their deservingly no.1 (no Im not saying Andy didn't deserve it). I would think fans' favourite will be the one big award Federer really wants to win. What's more satisfying is some stupid US media just have to swallow it and stop living in denial that Federer is boring and can't attract tennis fans.

Schuettler and Coria are arguable, but one argument that's totally irrelevant here would be their performance in 2004, after all this is Most improved player 2003. Else same argument could have been used for Andy case, no?

They should add 2 new categories - coach and commentator of the year. Imagine the rumpus if Brad and PMac got the nods in those ...

Great post, yee. I think on a legalistic basis Roddick won, but for who finished best toward the end of the year....Federer.

Did someone on the old board say that in 2003 the points earned from the Masters Cup wouldn't be included for determining the year end #1 but in previous years they were? I seem to remember one year Guga became year-end-number one by winning the Masters Cup but everyone felt Safin should have been the 'rightful' number one.
