It sounds stupid to me. If you go to sleep freezing, you won't get a good rest which is necessary for proper growth. If you want your muscles to grow which is the real way to burn extra calories, get a comfortable sleep and forget this quack's no blanket idea. I do not endorse this quack's (Dr. Johnson) no blanket theory.

Hmmm...well, it's on the Internet, so it's got to be true. Right?

The "pound a week" claim may be excessive, but yes, you will lose weight by making your body generate more heat to maintain steady-state. And you'll probably get used to it such that your sleep may not suffer at all. Those little passive calorie burners do work -- patients with Parkinsons (energy expended on muscle tremor) and emphysema (more use of accessory intercostal muscles to breathe) routinely report trouble maintaining weight, though a don't recommend either condition as a diet technique.

Its sad that everyone wants to do whatever they can to lose weight as long as it doesn't involve exercise.

Anyways here's something I found in the first link that I thought was incorrect:

"By the way, ANY diet or other weight loss system that claims to enable you to "lose many pounds in a week" can obviously not be true! Even if you ate NO food in a particular day, your body (an adult man, a woman a little less) only uses up around 2,200 Calories of your BMR (basal metabolism rate) plus a few hundred more Calories due to exercise and other physical activity. Therefore, even if you ate no food at all, you could only lose a little over half a pound of actual bodyfat per day! (Your weight can reduce more than that, but it is nearly entirely due to water content of your body, lost as sweat, urine, or moisture in the breath.) Anyone or any advertising that tells you otherwise is simply lying to you!"

As a watcher of The Biggest Loser, some of the contestants were losing 5-15 lbs per week (week after week). Also, the only people that burn 2,200 Calories per day are those who are NOT overweight. And if you fit in that category you obviously don't need a weight-loss program. Someone who weighs 300 lbs probably burns 5000 calories per day just to survive, but that is just an arbitrary guess.

A 300 lb. obese person does not burn 5000 KCal a day to survive, but a 300 lb. muscular person who is active can burn 5000 KCal daily. Yes, obese people have more fuel (bodyfat) than lean people, but they definitely don't use it quicker than lean people. Just because someone has a bigger engine (more bodyfat), doesn't mean he'll use up more fuel (bodyfat).

how do you think I know. I read it in a book. I think it was McEnroes. It said he had the air con on so it was very cold and that when he woke up his HR would be very low.

A good sleep is needed for muscle repair.

I read Mac's book and it wasn't in there. Sounds absolutely ridiculous to me.

Hmm never noticed your response to me.

There is no way a person at normal weight burns the same calories as a 300 lb. obese person when both are sedentary. The obese person's body has to work much harder just to pump blood through their body. Same goes for other bodily functions and keeping that large body warm.

That's a yes and no answer. What if you had a guy who was 250 lbs. and lean? Let's say 250 has only 25 lbs. of bf so that would make him 225 lbs. lean (muscle, bone, organs, water, etc.). What if 300 pounder had 150 lbs. of bf? The 300 pounder is 50 lbs. heavier than the 250 pounder, but the 250 guy can burn calories at a much faster rate due to more muscle mass.

Would think "advise" lead to illness? I'd be upset if I woke up with a cold because of this weight loss "program".

the BMR(daily calories burned for survival alone) depends mainly on Lean Body Mass,so the 250 lbs person in your example with Lean Body Mass of 225 lbs would burn more calories just to perform all the necessary organ funtions, than the 300 lbs person but only with 150 lbs lean body mass.A pound of fat every day burns 2 calories in contrast with muscle which burns 7-13 calories/pound.
