Just 2 Slams per year, Fed willl eclipse Sampras...
So if the Federer Express wins 2 Slams per year, he will eclipse Pete's 14 by the age of 29. Is it possible or probable? Records are made to be broken. Tiger wiill problably break Nicklaus' record.

In tennis, the stars come up too young and too quickly to get a good read on anything that far away.
2 per year seems very reasonable for the next couple years, health willing, but beyond that it's crapshoot city. |

How long have you been following tennis? When Mac went 82-3 in '84 at the age of 25, no one would believe you if you said he would never win another slam, but he didn't. When Becker won his 2nd Wimbledon at the age of 18, it seemed likely that he would win many more, but he only won 1 more. When Borg won his 11th slam in '81 at 26, no one would think that he wouldn't win another. Tennis is a very hard sport to play at the highest level more than a few years. Pete's obsession with winning & breaking records is rare. Fed's a great player, but I don't think he has the same tunnel vision like Pete. Pete studied Laver tapes as a kid & was determined to be the best ever. Fed had a different mindset.
As far as the Tiger Wods analogy, well its obvious that tennis already had its Tiger. |

Yes, tennis is a very difficult endeavor. For all we know, Hewitt may never win another slam. But for all the competitors currently out there, he does seem a teir above.

Although I want him to, I just don't see him winning 2 a year for that many years straight. What I do see him doing though, is winning 3 slams in one year though. That would be a first since Wilander 88, but it would be tough. And of course, what are we all waiting for but the ultimate....a true grand slam for fed.

I'm glad Federer don't need to listen to such predictions himself. Yes, no doubt he's been in tremendous form since last November but don't you all think it's still premature to predict such big things on him? I can't help thinking of Hewitt case, though I now I shouldn't. |

BTW PureCarlos, notwithstanding your signature, the GOAT Sampras has an Eastern forehand as does Davenport.

It's called bias man. I love topspin rallies, clay courts, therefore I love western. Sampras is awesome with his eastern, but where is Davenport from?

Lindsey Davenport is from Southern Cal. She, Sampras and Tracy Austin were taught by Robert Landsdorf who advocated hitting through the ball with an Eastern forehand for power.

I agree. Federer will be lucky to win 6 more Slams. He doesn't appear to have the singlemindedness of Sampras who treated tennis more like a job. Federer keeps talking about enjoying tennis. I get the feeling that if he stops enjoying tennis, he'll retire.

Davenport hit a very hard forehand. If she actually had better quickness and footspeed, she may have dominated more. She accompliashed alot seeing how slow she actually is.

I agree Edge, I was always impressed that Davenport managed to win slams with her lack of agility.

Lansdorp(in an article on The Forehand Drive in Tennis Mag) recommended a semi-western grip.
