Unhappy --MIGRAINES--especially after lots of tennis!

i really do drink alot of water, and try to drink alot throughout the game, but almost always get a migraine after three hours of play, indoors or especially outdoors. all i can think of is dehydration as a trigger, but can't seem to cure it by drinking more. and this 'relpax' rx is so expensive to buy to treat the inevitable headache! yes, i have used the electrolyte powders before and after play, taken an aspirin before play, but have not yet found a way to NOT get that headache!! any one out there have success in preventing migraines?? please, summer in texas, and i only get 9 relpax a month!!

Do you get auras associated with these migraines?
Is it on both halfs of your head?
Where do you get the headache?
Do you get headaches any other time besides tennis?
How long hong has this been occuring?
So it is ok to play 2 hrs and not get a migraine?
Have you consulted your MD about this?

I used to get migraines which incapacitated me for three days each time. And I'd get them about once a month.

I tried all the popular medications. I had MDs prescribing all kinds of stuff. It didn't work.

I found a Doctor of Chiropractic who specializes in upper cervical and cranial adjustments. Now, so long as I get at least one adjustment a month ... no migraines, period. I've gone from monthly (sometimes 2x / month) to [Thinking] ... the last migraine I had was at least two years ago.

You definitely have the symptoms of an effort migraine.

Please be careful and talk to your doctor on this, because it is mostly a non serious issue, but it possibly (small chance) may lead to stroke.

I second the recommendation to have someone work on your neck and upper back. It does not have to be a chiro per se, but someone who knows what they are doing from a massage standpoint. In a lot of cases massage techniques can get rid of this. I would find the best sports physio type in your area. Ask around at sports clubs, any pro teams or colleges.

I have the same kind ot migraines, but in my case, I beleive it is because of the sun, it really inhabilitate me after I play, it is almost as a alchohol hangover. It is usually in just one part of my head.

Do you also get the blurry spots in vision? That's what I get after a long match where I get someone overheated. I'll be fine while playing, then by the time I'm home I have these blurry streaks all in my vision. Sometimes I get the headaches along with it, sometimes not. Nothing seems to help, but it goes away in a couple of hours. Good luck. Migraines are the worst.

good ideas, thanks for the response. yes, it is usually one side of my head, usually feels, i would say, like a bullet shot above my eye. i will search for a chiro, don't quite know how to exact his expertise, but, great idea. also have heard of this cranio-sacral (?) type adjustments. no auras, altho much sensitivity to light and sound. nausea, too, to vomiting. really miserable. altho the relpax will usually knock it out before it gets to that extent. do have a neurologist, am taking verapamil to prevent them (forgot to mention, but it doesn't work, so...) also take magnesium supplements (forgot to mention earlier, as you can see, i was writing on relpax, which limits my ability to think!) can't...WON'T...give up tennis, but need to find help. i will pursue the chiro...

Eat some food while you play or drink gatorade instead of water.

Chiropractor... Hmm... i'll have to try that. I've taken Maxalat and Imitrex and they'll work to an extent. But then it's usually after I've gone through some pain. Especially the blurry vision and I still have to work. Ugh... might have to look at that.

I can't be outdoors without good sunglasses any more. If I am, I frequently getting splitting headaches.

It wouldn't hurt to see a doctor.

If you'd like, I will assist you.

I used to manage a multi-doc Chiropractic Clinic. Then I was a Chiropractic Business Consultant. (Doctors are cheap. I got tired of having to chase them for months to pay their bills. I don't do that anymore....)

But my point should have been ... I've probably been treated by almost 100 DCs. I recommend only about 12 of them. As with any other kind of job, there are lots of "mediocre" DCs and a few "stars". (I have 14 hospitals as clients now. MDs are good/average/bad in about the same percentages.)

Click my Screen Name and e-mail me if you want me to help you find a good DC. I hate migraines. If I can help I will.

Lovin' it,
I will agree with the chiro and massage recommendations (I think a good massage for everyone would make the planet a better place ). I also agree that you have to look around for a good chiro because I've been to a super duper excellent one and a complete quack and a few in between.

I think you might want to stop taking your magnesium supplement and see if that helps. Unfortunately, you have no idea what is in that pill, there is no law in the US that says it actually has to be magnesium, and you could be allergic to the fillers and additives. (http://www.consumerlab.com/)

You might also want to check out this book and see if it might help you. http://www.amazon.com/Heal-Your-Head...3374163&sr=1-2

In addition to all the good suggestion, you can also try wearing a hat one time and see if it helps.

The hot sun beating down on the top of my head for a couple hours will give me a headache even if I'm not playing tennis.

I took Zomig and it helped a lot. Talk to a doctor though. Pretty serious result of physical strain.

I also have migraines like you. I find that a 50/50 mix of gatorade and water keeps me well hydrated and on the court longer.
Many people drink plenty of water, but forget to replace the electrolytes that are being removed...
Good luck!
The chiropractor is also a very good option as stated earlier if the hydration does not help!
