Gamma Progression ST I

hey guys, ive always wanted my own stringing machine so i can start stringing for my self and some friends. ill prob end up offering services sometime in the future if i get adjusted to it enough. anyways i check pretty often on craigslist if there are stringing machines for sale and today i found on. its the gamma progression st I. its not the II thats being sold here on TW. anyways the price is 350. its about a year old. i was looking for information on it and i guess it was discontinued.. was that only because the second generation came out or was there a problem with it? does anyone have this machine and recommend it? any input from anyone would help. thanks!

i can help you with more info about the ST. do you have any pictures? 1st problem is that a Progression ST has not been made for almost 10 yrs now. There wasn't a problem with them, they were just updated and the model changed to STII. Actually the spring tensioner is identical to the STII. any other facts, let me know, i'll leave the opinions to the other people.

Hey Rj, I bought the same machine off Craiglist. Its very well built and works great. The base tool tray and ruler are handy. The six point mounting works great. The tensioner for some reason on mine needs to calibrated frequently, could this be due to the age?

My only other complaint would be the clamps are a bit of a hassle to use with its bases. Also, you want to make sure the clamps are not worn. The clamps I got were used quite a bit but still work.

thanks guys, i ended up buying it. i brought the price down to 310 and he gave me a free hopper. lol.

anyways everything seems to work fine. im sure it was stolen because he said he worked @ a well known tennis place but he knew nothing about stringing and how the machine worked. he said it was only used for a year but it had some rust on it.

i took steel wool to it and most of the rust is off. clamps look decent. ill take some pics and post em up.

all i need to do now is buy a crap racket, crap string, some tools, calibrator, and some screws to mount it to my stand.

I'd suggest going over the whole tensioner and making sure all the screws are secure, take note if anything is worn or paint is missing. If the tensioner has had decent use I'd take a look at the Latch Hook Block (the hook the holds the brake lever in) sometimes a 'U' worn into the metal where the brake lever contacts the hook. This leads to tension fluctuation.

yes the wing knob bases are a bit of a pain, but the still work. that is one of the things we upgraded on a ST to and make it an STII, mounting system also.

hey gamma tech... do u happen to know what size screws are used to screw the machine to the stand? there are 4 screws that i assume go through a washer then into the machine to hold it into place... do u happen to know what size the screws are?

you can use the rubber feet if you have them. otherwise it is an M6 bolt that is approximate 15mm long, M6x15-1.0.
