There are a couple ways to use a starting clamp. Here's one.

Default Two tensions?

I'm a newbie here. Nice to see all this information. I've read on many threads here where the mains and crosses are at two different tensions. What is the advantage of that?

Default String Help

Hi everyone, if anyone can give advice from your expertise..

I have a Hyper ProStaff 6.1 (95) and strung it with Luxilon Big Banger ALU Power 16L String at too low of tension (59lbs but somehow now it's too powerful to play.. normally string at 62-63).. I was wondering if I can replace maybe the mains or crosses with a Luxilon Big Banger Ace 18 Strings.. is it possible to just replace mains or crosses?

Also, if possible, then should I make the 18 Strings the mains or crosses? I know that the mains break quicker so which is the more durable string?... that one should be used for mains.

Thanks for your help

The short answer is no, but there is a lot said on the issue here.

i tried searching but couldnt find the answer. Can someone please direct me to where i can find how increasing/decreasing the tension would affect the shot. i.e, does increasing the tension increase power but lose control...etc.. thanks.

In general, more tension gives more control and less power. Less tension gives more power and less control.

Since spin is related to control and higher tension is also related to control, I'd say more tension is related to more spin.
I think racquet head speed has a much greater impact on spin than string tension.

Another opinion about tension/spin: Some feel that lower tension enables you to impart more spin because the ball stays in contact with the stringbed longer.

Default Different gauge, different weight?

Does anyone know if the string gauge affects racket weight to any significant degree? IE 16g making the racket more head heavy than 17g?

I have 2 rackets the same size. One has 16 the other 17. The 16 feels heavier to me, but I wonder if I'm just imagining. BTW the racket with 16 also has head protection tape. Maybe that's it, or a combination of both?

Thanks for any help offered.

The protection tape is far more significant than the difference in gauge. If you are feeling anything, and it isn't just in your head, it's the protection tape. If you are concerned about the difference, I'd start there. The difference in weight between 16 and 17 is nearly imperceptible.

Unless the racquets are matched, there can be a significant difference between racquets that look identical even without strings.
Did you check the weight of both before they were strung?
