Default proper way to use Silent partner swing tensioner?

I'm not completely certain of the proper way to use the silent partner tensioner, although this may seem trivial or not; I'm not sure. However, this is what I do; tell me if I'm doing this right. I insert the string in the split-drum, I let the arm drop, I lift the arm ( without touching anything else, including the tensioning drum, THEN I rotate the drum clockwise, and then drop the arm, and keep doing this until it goes to the desired tension. is this the proper tecnique? if you are not sure of what I'm saying, I could get a video going,

If you just lift the arm up, are you lifting all the way up? If so, you're releasing all of the tension on the string.

Hold the drum as you lift up. Actually, lift the arm a bit, say 20 degrees, then hold the drum and lift the arm more and drop again.

okay, I see. before, I was lifting the arm all the way up to the point where it becomes loose, and just holding the drum in place while I lift seems to not work as it requires an enormous amount of strength when near desired tension, where I friction-burned my hand doing it.
