Need Clarification Eligible vs. Ineligible rankings

Looking at rankings for Norcal Section in the USTA website, I noticed that there are two (2) pulldowns....Eligible and Ineligible rankings. Can some care to explain the difference between the two. Many Thanks in advance!

the diffrence is that the eligible has played and won some points or matches and the noneligible has not won no matches and points.

It partly depends on whether you're looking at National rankings or sectional rankings.

What Johalojoe said is true for national rankings, but it's not that simple for sectional rankings.

For sectional rankings the ineligible list might include people who recently aged up, kids from other sections are ineligible for rankings in other sections (so a SoCal kid can't be ranked in the Southwest - they may have won points in a Southwest tournament, but are not eligible to be ranked in the Southwest), kids who are not citizens of the U.S. for at least 1/2 the year (184 days minimum) are ineligible, etc.

There is generally a minimum number of points to be eligible. Lots of the ineligible players near the top of the list have aged up and become ineligible for their old age group. Then there are lots of others with few points, not yet enough to be eligible.

Inelgible also includes players from other sections what have played in tourneys in that section

Just a followup question...

Say a registered 10 year old plays in a 12 year old age group event, then wins some matches and earns points, my understanding of the explanantions provided is, the player becomes classified as an "in-eligible" player in the 12 age group ranking? Is this a common occurence by players and parents?

That is NOT the case. The 10 year old will end up having a ranking in both the 10s and 12s - eligible in both.


The majority of "ineligible" players are out-of-section players.

no the player get an eligible rank in both 10s and 12s age group ranking. He will have earned points for both age groups and will be ranked accordingly.
