I know that in a +L1 FIC tournament where there is a main draw of 32 consisting of 8 seeds, the eight seed positions are at slots 1, 5, 9, 13, 20, 24, 28 and 32. However, if eight of the thirty-two main draw slots are reserved for the qualifiers, are there predetermined slot positions in the main draw for those eight qualifiers or are the remaining 24 slots just assigned randomly between the rest of the main draw participants and the eight qualifiers?
Should it be right that someone that made it directly into the main draw without having to qualify would have to play a main draw seed in the first round, or do the eight qualifiers normally get matched up against the eight seeds in the first round? If the qualifier slots are predetermined, can anyone provide a supporting USTA link that documents the draw layout? |

It's random.
Why shouldn't it "be right"? There's already the seeding process which basically protects the "top" players from having to play somebody as good or better in an early round. You feel the non-seeds also need protecting? Heck, why not seed all 32 and have 1 play 32, 2 play 31, etc.? Better yet, let's not fix what ain't broke. |

When I had first looked at the main draw, it looked like seven of the eight main draw seeds were all matched up against qualifiers, so I figured that they had messed up the draw for the eighth seed by not also matching him up against the remaining qualifier. Upon further review (after I read your reply,) I realized that I jumped to a wrong conclusion (and that I couldn't count...) Actually only five of the eight main draw seeds were matched up against qualifiers.
Thanks for the clarification 10isDad. |

I will say that "random" sometimes takes interesting turns. In big tournaments, it seems my kid plays one of the top 3 seeds more than he doesn't. Perhaps "fate" is more like it.
