Qualifiers in Indian Wells:
F. Dancevic b. Tsonga 61 62 v. good result, lots of noise about the French juniors. Dancevic needs to beat G. Lapentti to get into the main draw (I think he can do it). Tsonga: Finished 2003 as No. 2 junior in world...Also reached SF at Wimbledon in 2003 (l. to Mergea)...Won US Open junior title (d. Baghdatis)... Dancevic was never this high in juniors, but he's better now in seniors than Tsonga. I met today F. Niemeyer at Jarry, talked to him, he's preparing for Europe (he was being coached today by Lareau) Pelletier lost 1st round in women's Q to Beygelzimer 6-4 in the 3rd). Drake lost in 2nd, to Diaz-Oliva. Kirilenko top seed in qualies, v. tough tournament.

Actually, I was joking about Danilidou. I know she`s been playing on the WTA tour and had some pretty good wins, though dissapeared recently(injuries??) Thannks for the other info though. I have a hard time picturing Lareau commentating. Is he any good?? |

Aleksandra Wozniak, which is presently the 3rd junior in the world, was the runner up in the
Luxilon Cup Girl's Singles taking place during the Nasdaq 100 in Miami. Philip Bester, another Canadian junior, was in the final of the Luxilon Cup Boy's Singles. Congratulations to both of them!

When I saw the title of this thread I thought maybe Kim Clijsters and RF had gone to the Canadian Embassy and asked for political asylum.
Maybe having the pros show up will spur some interest. But it's going to take a lot of money for indoor facilities, coaching and travel (go to warmer clims in the winter to play outdoors and compete in junior tournaments) to actually grow pros. In addition to some cultural changes - I'm sure most bigger boys will be looked down on if they turn their backs on hockey for tennis. |

You didn't hear the latest news??? Kim and RF have been sworn in as Canadian citizens! Not only do we have to protect the states against Russian missile attacks, but Russian tennis players too!

No Canadian looks down on Steve Nash for choosing basketball. Oh, right, he's one of the smaller boys. I think with everyone who follows any sport anywhere knowing who Roger Federer is, I think any bigger boy could chose tennis,,,esp. as the NHL has alienated so many fans by not even playng this year. Unfortunately for tennis, unlike hockey, you have to have more than 1 indoor court in a building to train tennis players, $$. & parental interest.

I just confirmed this with Tennis Canada here in Montreal.
The two Futures tournaments which normally took place in Toronto (last year in Lachine) and Montreal during the summer are rescheduled this year for the autumn, probably after Oct 15. Taking into account the weather in Canada, I'd say this is a quite unfortunate choice. Hope they won't disappear totally from the calendar ...

Erik Chvojka, the former top Canadian junior ... great S-Volleyer, 18yrs old now ...
it took him 3 rounds of Q to get into the main draw at USA F7 Futures Dates : 04 Apr to 10 Apr 2005 Venue : Little Rock, AR, USA Grade : 6.02 Surface : Hard http://www.atptennis.com/en/common/T...05/229/FRR.pdf he's based now in New York, has a sponsor and a coach there, and will travel from there to various Futures, trying to establish himself let's hope he gets more points .... he's presently 1440 or so on the computer ... thus waiting for him it's hard work ... he has the talent.

Frederic Niemeyer (who's now 2nd in the Canadian rankings), after 3 rounds of qualifying, just beat Ivo Heuberger of Switzerland (ranked 135, the 4th seed), in the Challenger at Tallahassee, in 3 sets:
http://www.atptennis.com/en/tournaments/challenger/ The top seed is Jonas Bjorkman. Frederic is scheduled to play in the 2nd round Tsonga of France, thus another tough match.

Frederic Niemeyer beat today Tsonga (Fra), the former #2 junior in the world: 6-2 1-0 ret.
He's on a 5 match streak including the qualies. He will be playing in the quarters Van Scheppingen (Ned). In this Challenger at Tallahassee, several seeds were eliminated: Bjorkman (1), Gambill, Moodie (2), P. Goldstein.
