ok, so up until now, i thought that everyone gets into this tournament because this is an open. but i just got on the tournament site and it says that its only taking top 64. any insight on what the selection process is? or maybe you can explain what it says on the website

The website is pretty clear: the top 56 in the Southern USTA + up to 8 entries from lower age group. Those younger players have to be in the top 80 in their age group and they would be selected in ranking order. Typically, if 8 lower aged people do not apply then the remaining players would be chosen by ranking order.
It is weird that they're calling it an "Open", yet restricting it to Southern USTA. Sounds like it's a closed tournament for that section. Last edited by 10isDad : 11-22-2008 at 12:27 PM. |

It is "Open" in that players from anywhere can enter, unlike the "Closed" Championships which are for GA players only. Strictly speaking, the tournament is not limited to Southern Section players - if there are no more than 64 entrants, they will all get in no matter where they are from.
