Iron Man,

You are not aware that eight of me ten mentioned players did play also in open era. Only Cochet and Riggs not. The eight were extremely strong in their prime and mostly also afterward.

For instance Tony Roche beat John McEnroe in 1978 in straight sets.

Another example: 42 years old Ken Rosewall defeated Guillermo Vilas by 6-2,6-2,6-0 in end-1976.

AS the most posters on General Player Discussion you underrate the older players.

The current players play faster but only by using modern equipment...

You are right regarding Rod Laver. While he is not named in my list at all he is almost best in many categories making him probably the perfect player without significant weaknesses. If Rosewall would not have had that medium service he maybe could match the Rocket on this field.
Yes.Rosewall is the only player than can match Laverīs BH ( at least one handed) and had just as good if not better footwork and volleys. He was a bit steadier returning, not as flashy, though.Laver had a better first serve and possibly a more percutant forehand, but the difference is really close.

Maybe not, but you could see he never believed he could beatīem.

Chang was a pretty good player, but vastly overrated ( maybe because he was short, like Ferrer he gest so much praise, but then...what about a true great short player like Laver or Rosewall???)

Chang's greatest weapon was probably his determination and speed around the court. Weak serve, no huge fh, not great bh. Just adequate, average. He was good, nothing exceptional. I can't judge Laver or Rosewall, those gentlemen were before my time. But knowing how much they have achieved, they must have had talents beyond anyone else's, considering how short they were. I believe they would have been successful even today.

No matter how you like your forehands, you would probably not pick JonnyBlaze's forehand as your standard to copy.

hoodjem,

Hello you critical poster,

English is not my native language. But I guess that most readers understand my words...

It must have read: As the most posters on G.P.D. do, you underrate the older players...

Okay. I respect that.

But, in my observation on the GPD, most posters know little to nothing about pre-80s players. They seem to under-rate or discount them.

hoodjem,

Thanks.

I agree that many posters, even a few of our forum, don't know much about the achievements of pre-1980s or even pre-1990s.
