Nice going for Oudin making a final.
Its like the dead are rising from the ground. I completely forgot about fornet for about a year until recently, its like she dropped off the map. Same thing with Peer, who I havent seen play for about a year.

A JJ/Oudin final would be fitting, considering both are slumping and Oudin first made waves by beating JJ on grass.

Interesting comments by Wozniacki.

"I believe I can win Wimbledon this year, I have to believe," the world No. 7 told the Daily Mail. "The women’s game is wide open at the moment and the depth of quality players has increased significantly in the last 10 years. You never know what will happen, there will always be upsets and people you don’t expect in the quarters and the semis. I didn’t see Sara Errani getting to the final of the French Open but she had a really good tournament. I’ve brought Thomas in to help out and he has so much experience, is a Grand Slam winner and hopefully that can make a difference. My Dad is still on court helping out and he gets along well with Thomas, but ultimately I’m in charge because I’m the one out there hitting the shots."

Wozniacki is even more delusional than before. For as long as daddy is the real boss in her life, I don't see much happening. Her only real shots are at the USO and AO, and even then most of the top players specialize on hard courts. She would need a repeat of the USO 2009 draw falling apart and to have a pigeon like Radwanska/Pavlyuchenkova/Jankovic in the final.

Well at least Woz can say she believes she can win. Its better than just moping. But she really has no shot at Wimbledon. The Errani comment is a little insulting, because Errani was better on clay this season then Woz has ever been on it or on grass (red clay....not green). Errani won a buttload on clay, it was not just "a good tournament" at RG. As for the quality of the tour increasing in the last 10 years....she should thank her lucky stars she was not on the tour ten years ago, she would never have gotten near the top 15 let alone number 1. She would've been knocked around so bad she would need a pillow strapped well...you know where.

Tell yourself whatever you need to psych yourself up Caro...but seriously though...some thoughts are better kept in your head.

Cornet has a pulse!! She made the finals of Strasburg this year as well. I ain't holding my breath for her to storm deep at a major but at least she is doing something somewhere. Maybe this is a turning point for her though. Who knows, after her horrid start to the year a title is some progress.

Have no idea if she's watched the top 4-5 at the moment and the amount of major titles they've won coming from end 2011 up to today but girl is clearly crazy if she thinks the women's game is wide open at the moment. It's not totally locked but in the current state, can't see anybody other than these 5 ladies clinch the biggies (adding Clijsters too).

She'll need to at least get passed Sharapova, Victoria, Serena, Radwanska or Petra -- even more so on surfaces not called clay something which is an impossible task for her current now almost totally declined defensive counter-punching game.

Exactly (for Errani).

Wozniacki's on some serious...stimulants...if she thinks the game is "wide open" enough for her to get through--with daddy still pulling her by the puppet strings. Without a new, serious coach to completley erase daddy's work, she will struggle without a major well toward the end of her career.

I don't see her as even having the late bloomer potential of Pierce or Schiavone; she's just...bleh as a player--and that's after becoming a so-called #1 player.

Awesome. I'd love to see her make some decent runs. Say what you want about her game/fitness, but, more than any American, she seems to have such a likeable personality/spirit so her success would do the most for the sport here.

Really? The "goody goody" American persona used by Oudin has not been an overwhelming hit compared to the popularity of other American players in recent history (how many print/online "popular athlete" lists has she socred high on, or generated big TV ratings?). Moreover, in the early, 1st half of Capriati's career, she too was packaged as some "sweet"/"goody goody" teenager, but that act wore thin fast, as it seems phony or trying to sell an idea not in step with the average fan's perceptions of sports stars (usually self confident and not afraid to let you know it).

To which Americans are you comparing her? If you're comparing her to Capriati, the Williams sisters, or Roddick, that is an unfair comparison, since she hasn't had the on-court success as those. Comparing her to McHale or Falconi seems more relevant. Ask 100 casual American tennis fans who Melanie Oudin is, and maybe a quarter will know who she is, even though her flash in the pan was years ago. But I bet not even 10 know who the other non-Williams American girls are.

She hasn't been on tv because she's been losing. That has little-to-nothing to do with her personality. Because in the brief period and shortly after when she was winning, she was all over the place--commercials, tv coverage, etc.

That sounds like your beef with her personality. She comes off as a hard worker and a fighter. That's what I meant, more than your "goody goody"
perception.

I agree. Many nationals of other countries dislike what they perceive as the common stereotype of the brash American. Personally, I like Melanie's personality just fine. It doesnt seem phony or taught by a PR firm at all. Must admit I didnt appreciate her andymurray-line cMons when they became just too much, so hopefully she's adjusted that downward in frequency during the time she's been off the radar.

But none of that matters when the 208-ranked player beats the 22-ranked player to win the very first title of her career. Grats to Melanie for starting in qualifying and winning 8 matches in a row to claim the Birmingham Championship!

Makarova beat Kvitova at Eastbourne 1st round. Not looking good for Kvitova.

Wozniacki can give Kvitova a ride to the Wimbledon pre-party after losing to McHale. Wozniacki hit 26W-30UE. Unusually high for her on both counts, even with it going 3 sets.
