I'm doing a scrub/update of my player database and one of the fields added is whether said player had 1H or 2H backhand. ATP site is no help here, so the search is usually:
Wikipedia or ITF player page - good for recent players, less so farther back Player image/video evidence - Google, Youtube, etc. Web archives, player news/magazine articles and if still no luck ... well that's why I'm here, hope this group can help out. I'll be posting intermittently in player batches of 20, and need assignment in one of three categories: 1H, 2H, or 2H with 2H forehand (e.g. Santoro, Gambill). I suppose there is fourth choice - 1H BH with 2H FH - but haven't run across any examples. thanks in advance - and will be interested where you got the information (personal recollection, specific website, etc.) Player Country Active Hank Pfister USA 1977-1988 Ray Ruffels AUS 1968-1979 Barry Phillips-Moore AUS 1968-1978 Brad Drewett AUS 1976-1990 Russell Simpson NZL 1973-1987 Patrice Dominguez FRA 1971-1981 Jan Gunnarsson SWE 1982-1992 Danie Visser RSA 1982-1990 Bernie Mitton RSA 1973-1984 Syd Ball AUS 1969-1982 Sherwood Stewart USA 1968-1984 Marty Davis USA 1981-1989 Bruce Manson USA 1974-1984 Bob Giltinan AUS 1968-1979 Jiri Hrebec CZE 1971-1981 John Feaver GBR 1971-1984 Karl Meiler GER 1970-1983 Steve Denton USA 1981-1987 Colin Dowdeswell GBR 1973-1986 Paul Kronk AUS 1972-1984 |

Hank Pfister USA 1977-1988 1HB ( His big shot was his serve. he had a big serve)
Sherwood Stewart USA 1968-1984 (didn't he used to play doubles with Marty Riessen ? I don't remember his game. I would be very surprised if he hit a 2HB) Bruce Manson USA 1974-1984 1HB. (For a little trivia, I also kinda remember Bruce was the best man at Harold Solomon's wedding.) Steve Denton USA 1981-1987 1HB. (He used to play doubles with Kevin Curren who sometimes would hit a 2HF in addition to mostly using a 1HF) |

The Germans Gehring, Maurer, Meiler, Jelen, and even Knippschild who played later on, had all one handed backhands. Ruffels and Philipps-Moore were Aussie lefties with one handers. Jiri Hrebec had a one hander, too, his best match was a Davis Cup win on grass over Newcombe in 1973. In the mid 70s, most players played still one handed backhands. Drysdale, McMillan, Segura were exceptions, before Connors and Borg arrived on the scene.

Pfister was also a big server, who played doubles with Vic Amaya, they won the 1980 FO and lost the 1982 USo to Curren...and Denton Manson, I always thought he was far more talented than he showed. He beat Borg in the 1979 Palms Springs first round and defeated Clerc and Mc Namara, two solid top ten memebers in the 1981 USO, where Gerulaitis defeated him at the quarter finals. Stewart, one of the greatest doubles specialists of the 70īs, playing first with Mc Nair and later with Riessen.Always played the left side.texan born.

Hrebec was considered to be one of the best eeuropean cc promises in the early 70īs.I think he defeated John Newcombe at a DC rubber, but injuries prevented him form achieving his full potential. Denton,Konk,Giltinan,Pfister,Feaver were basically known for a big serve. Denton being the only one able to reach the top ten in singles, besides being very succesful at doubles.
