'Hook' .. what is it?

I've heard that being used for some players strokes.. latest one for Nadal's forehand and in the past for Sampras's backhand and forehand.

What does it mean ?

When you hook your opponent, you call his ball out when it actually hit the line. The hook forehand is obviously a different type of hook which occurs when a player curves a shot that appears to be going out, but somehow curves in at the last moment. It's sort of like that thing Angelina Jolie does with bullets.

Being called a "hooker'' in tennis means you are being insulted as a cheater.

Hooking your shot is accomplished with tremendous spin which makes the ball dramatically curve (hook) into the landing area.

(Just different ways to say what Rickson posted.)

Except I have no idea what you are referencing. She's a (bad) actor and a (good) humanitarian. But I've never seen her hook bullets ... unless you are referencing one of her movie parts. (Which would explain why I don't follow your analogy. I don't like to watch bad actors.)

may I ask why this is considered cheating... that doesn't make sense. So if someone hits with alot of spin its cheating?

Yes, a hook shot is cheating because the ball is supposed to land out, but the player who uses this despicable shot has the nerve to actually get it in.

A hook ball is just like a curve ball. It curves out, then in, all the while dropping (though I don't think there's as much of a drop in the tennis shot as it's mostly the out and in action if I'm not mistaken).

There are TWO uses of the term "hooking". One means "cheating". One refers to hitting shots with spin.

It's the same hook as the golf hook, when the ball is curving inside

You can slice too, it's when the ball is curving outside, like the slice serve, or a slice drop shot

Agreed (per my smart-aleck "10,000 feet" crack). I get the 'bee sting' fullness thing and all and it can look luscious and all up to a point, but when it strays WAY BEYOND a sense of proportion and symmetry (when putting the pieces of the puzzle together) I then part ways. Admittedly, her stiff "holier-and-morally-superior-than-the-world" vibe turns me off as well. Ok, I'll spill the real beans with Angeline Balloon Lips: while playing golfing it at Lahinch and Ballybunnion a number of years back, I saw a BBC interview of Jolie who during the course of the interview REPEATEDLY took potshots at NYC saying it "smells" (to the amused delight of the person interviewing her). And there she was, years later in all her smug, hypocritical glory, accepting some *good guy* award from (I think it was) NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg. Love the tatoo though....gorgazh....
