Got back from Phoenix Sunday night.
While I was down there, I tried the DFH 90 Minute Imperial IPA. Impressed. Not in love with it, but a nice blend of hops and malt for the beautiful weather that they had in Phoenix over the weekend.

Is that a stronger version than the regular 90 minute? |

Not sure...haven't tried the regular. Imperials generally tend to be "amped up" versions - the best Imperial IPA I've had still is the Southern Tier Unearthly. It's a big beer for sure.

Pretty sure the "regular" 90 minute is an Imperial/Double.
The Unearthly is a good one, and relatively inexpensive, too - I've found the bombers around $6.50 at a few places. |

Then I guess I had the "regular" 90 minute. Wasn't aware if there was a difference or not...

Got some Riverhorse Hop-a-lot-amus the other day - $9.99/4-pack. 8.5%abv and a nice beer, brewed here in NJ.
I took the month of Feb off from alcohol completely. It was tough but I did it as a challenge to myself. I broke "the fast" on March 1st Belgian style with a big St. Bernardus ABT 12. Watching hockey that night, there were two of every skater on the ice! |

I also like that Southern Tier Unearthly Imperial IPA as well as Southern Tier Gemini Imperial IPA. Both very good. Anyone tried them side by side? I haven't.

I tried a sampler pack of the other Southern Tier stuff (their Pack of Pales), and I was underwhelmed. Maybe I was expecting too much since I love the Unearthly and Iniquity.

SlapShot: Oak Aged Unearthly is in. Found it at Cellars Roseville, and Four Firkins also has it, apparently. I'm sure most of the usual places will have it, too.
Sometimes, the regular Unearthly is just a little too much for me, but the oak aging seems to mellow it out. I bought a couple bombers, plus one of the regular for a side-by-side (that will have to happen on the weekend, for obvious reasons). |

Can you detect any oak aftertaste kind of like an oak aged chardonnay? |

Boy, that's hard to say. I don't think my palate is that discerning. If you gave me a chard, I could maybe tell you "that's oaky", but I'm not sure I get that same thing from this beer. That is not to say that the next guy wouldn't identify it in a second.
Maybe when I do a side-by-side with the regular stuff, I'll be able to pick it out. I should point out, while I'm here, that, as mellow as it is, somehow this is still an 11%ABV beverage. |

I saw the oak aged Unearthly in an e-mail from the Firkins - I need to get out and pick up a few. Sounds fantastic.

I just swung in there and picked up four bombers. Looked like they had about 10 others still out. I didn't ask what they had in the back.

Just had a Dogfish Head World Wide Stout which I think is set at a whopping 18%abv. Similar tanginess to a 120min IPA (which somewhat emulates the sweetness of the 90min) but with a much deeper/darker stoutlike overtone. Not for the lightweights, but a real nice treat for those that can handle it and those willing to experiment at $7.50/12oz bottle. Some places even sell it for over $10/12oz bottle.

Surly Abrasive Ale - a DIPA that, I think, wanders down a similar path as Hopslam. A very fruity, hoppy DIPA. $16.29 for 4 pint cans. This will be a seasonal, I believe. I'll probably get a 4-pack when it comes out each year, but not a regular rotation kind of beer.

Sipping some Lagunitas IPA on tap. Another beer that is much better from a keg than a bottle.

Tried a couple of new ones this weekend.
1. Stone Sublimely Self-Righteous Black IPA-nice, big bitter taste up front with velvety mouth feel, evens out to a mild ethanol back end that is very refreshing. IMHO, many IPAs remain thick and bitter on the back end but this Stone beer was nice. Big flavor and alcohol content but pretty refreshing after mowing the lawn on a hot summer day. The only other black IPA I've tried is Southern Tier Iniquity and I think the Stone SSR is better. 2. Ninkasi Tricerahops Double IPA-another big and strong up-front bitterness with strong hints of grapefruit, lots of citrus aroma, very "thick" in the mouth with lingering bitterness. A good one but nothing I would drink multiple bottles of in one sitting. I've never been a fan of most New Belgium beers but I have been enjoying Ranger IPA quite a bit. Sixers of Ranger and SN Torpedo were on sale for $7, so I snatched up a few.
