I've gone IPA crazy and some the last month, thanks to this thread
imo: Dogfish Head: 90 - superb Midas Touch - way too sweet, never again on my dime 60 - ok, would drink it but wouldn't buy it again had another DFH brew, can't remember which (might've been either the Indian Brown Ale or Raison D'Etre) but didn't particularly cared for it neither Lagunitas: Hop Stoopid - too sweet for me, not as hoppy as the name implies IPA - didn't stand out for me neither Anderson Valley: Hop Ottin' IPA - also too sweet Brother David Double and Triple - way too sweet tried another 22oz of AVBC, forget which, didn't care for it neither Marin Brewing Company: IPA - ok, not too interesting for me Porter - ok, I prefer Deschuttes Black Butte Porter Full Sail: IPA - did not finish the bottle, my drinking buddy did not neither Pale Ale - we had it but I didn't bother Sierra Nevada Harvest - superb, my fav during the experiment, unfor it's seasonal and I can't find it anymore Green Flash Imperial IPA - superb, may be my new fav Bear Republic Racer5 - still decent but no longer up there for me Sierra Nevada Torpedo - so far the best bang for the buck at $7/sixpack, perfect for guests Last edited by siata94 : 08-24-2009 at 10:17 AM. Love the 90 minute, both strong and tasty, the 120 i wasn't too fond of.
It's too bad you can't get New Glarus anywhere outside of Wisconsin because the New Glarus Hop Hearty is perhaps one of the best IPA's i have ever had. One you can get outside of WI is Three Floyd's Alpha King, brewed in Indiana, don't know the alcohol content but it's high and mighty! And on non-IPA matters, i have fallen in love with the Rogue Double Dead Guy Ale this summer. |

Awesome, thanks for the info on which ones to avoid. I was on a wheat beer kick for a while but they just got too sweet for me and now I usually try to avoid beers on the sweeter side; however, I'll still throw down a Sea Dog fruit beer every now and then when the mood strikes. |

I also bought a twelvie of the Sierra Nevada Anniversary Ale (IPA - fall seasonal), and I'll pass along my impressions of that when I get a chance to sample. |

I tried the Steamworks Third Eye pale ale last night - that's a very tasty drinking beer. Not too heavy, perfect level of hops.

No - I picked that up at the liquor store right by Michael Lynne's Tennis in Hopkins. I was quite impressed flavor-wise. It's definitely a suggested brew.

for those in the Bay Area, Harvest is plentiful. That's where I'd tried it. I need a bottle of Harvest so I can do a side by side w/ Green Flash IIPA. I will ask my drinking buddy in SF to do a side-by-side as he's just bought a case of Green Flash.

It's really not fair. SF already has great year round weather and wine country nearby. Now it is hogging all the great beers! |

I lived in San Diego for 5 years and Green Flash Imperial IPA is one of my faves. Actually, it was my fave until trying SN Harvest. Best beer I've had in years. I can only find it in 22oz bottles in the Sacto area. The wife and I took the daughter to the state fair on Saturday and, lucky me, wandered by the "award winning craft brew" stand. I was able to get a 24oz Harvest on tap and later on, the Dogfish Head 90 IPA 24oz on tap. I was pretty much lit and happy at that point! Good thing my wife volunteered to DD that day If you're ever back east, there's a small brewery outside of Charlottesville called Blue Mountain. They have a beer called Dark Hollow (an imperial stout aged in American oak bourbon barrels) that is, without a doubt, the best beer I've ever had. Too bad they can't ship to Cali (I've tried).

Hopefully you had a decent break in between the two beers because 24 ounces of Dogfish Head 90 minute will get your head spinning!

Brother KT, glad we've found each other
I've had the Red Rocket and I agree (only because we're brothers). I've gone thru 2 six-packs of it and not sure if I'd buy it again. Two 24oz in 2 hours is just crazy. I was on a vacationing binge, 2 separate trips in July totalling 11 days. We drank about 6 bottles each each night, some more, some a lot more if we're tossing darts. But that's over 4-6 hours, not 2. The best part about that trip was that I actually lost weight, all that drinking and eating. I've found a new diet... My drinking buddy is much more tolerant of the sweeter stuff. I didn't care for the taste nor for the price; that Brother David stuff is pretty expensive. Def doesn't justify the 2-3x price of say Harvest of Torpedo. Went to my local Bevmo yesterday, no Harvest At $4 per 22oz bottle, that's the best value. If my dear beer brother is coming to Socal, bring me a case for sibbling sakes... |
