What a score last night...local watering hole had Lagunitas Hop Stoopid, Stone Ruination and DFH Palo Santo Marron on tap...at the same time!! Of course, I had to go for the hat trick. My wife wasn't picking up her cell, so I had to huff it the mile and a half home (wasn't driving after that one). Luckily it was a nice, clear night and a fun walk home. Happy weekend to all of the thread regulars.

Have not had an IPA in 9 days now. Foot is getting better. Will have to throw one in every now and then at WOB but I will no longer be buying them for home consumption.

On antibiotics due to a minor surgical procedure this week and a head cold, but still managed to sneak in some Red Hook IPAs and an Anchor Steam Off to a brewery tour tomorrow- Captain Lawrence- in Elmsford, NY. Had their IPA (or DIPA) last year and remember it being pretty good. Founder started off as a home brewer, so hopefully get to ask him some questions. Happy weekend- cheers, big ears! DC

When you are in pain, the no IPA thing is not a big deal. Now as the pain subsides, I begin to dream of that aroma and taste in my mouth... |

I don't know how all you guys go with the beer. Wine or hard, is the way to go.

is alcohol causing the gout or stress or food? not sure if you've had enough time narrowing it down yet. i can relate having food allergies but no ailments as serious as gout.

The only changes that preceded the gout were related to all 3. 1) Super Bowl night I got my first hang over in over a year the next AM. I almost always feel great the next day because I regulate how much I'm allowed to have each night, but I broke the rule that night. That was 3 days prior. 2) As I mentioned earlier, our house was broken into 3.5 weeks ago. That has been a headache dealing with the wife who was frantic the whole time and understandably so. Then we just decided to move 5 minutes down the road. So the last few weekends have been spent packing and throwing crap out of the house. Tough leaving a place you've been in a long time. Stressful too. 3) As for food, we had been visiting some of the higher end places quite a bit for happy hour while Grandma watched the little guy. I almost always opt for tuna at those places. I read on the Mayo Clinic website that sometimes tuna can cause it. I've been hung over plenty of times earlier in my life so I think that Number 1 is the weakest possibility. I'd have to say that number 2 was the primary cause with number 3 possibly contributing or perhaps a perfect storm of all 3. Last edited by mikeler : 02-17-2012 at 11:54 AM. |

Can do wine or hard, but prefer not to. Wine puts me to sleep, and hard I leave for "special occasions". To me, beer is just great all-around.

I have a compromise! Dogfish Head Midas Touch, made with muscat grapes, honey and saffron. If I remember correctly, no grains are used and it should be low in purine content. Not an IPA but not a bad brew. Take care!

Ooh, low purine I can do. Think I've tried a sample of that along the line. |

However, following that first attack, I'd recommend greatly reducing your purine intake. You might want to get your blood uric acid checked. You really want to get it down in the lower range if possible. That means eating less purine-rich meat and avoiding anything with yeast in it. Another culprit is soup made from chicken stock, which is very heavy in purines. I was at a beer education seminar on Friday, and when we got to Belgian Ales, the host commented that these are notorious for giving people gout. He said he knew a Chimay rep who experienced this. In order to resume beer drinking, I've cut way back on my meat intake. It will take you a while to figure out what you can eat at what kinds of restaurants, but I'd definitely recommend giving it a try--it beats going without beer. The toughest are delis and fast food. |

^^^ I eat fairly healthy and only consume white meat or fish. I've cut way back on all meat for the moment. Good news is today I can move my big toe for the first time in 10 days so things are looking up. Thanks for all the info. Never realized how common gout is. Do IPAs have a lot of yeast?

^ most of the yeast remains in the fermenter and not filled in the bottle. however with some beer styles the yeast is evident when observing the cream colored residue in the bottom of the bottle.
there are different yeast strains for the beer styles. depending on the amount of fermentable sugars an approximate yeast body is used to consume those sugars.

http://www.acumedico.com/purine.htm
Check out this table of purine content. Surprisingly, some things like filet are actually lower in purines than chicken or most kinds of fish. Trout and tuna are high. Sardines are very high. So although red meat is certainly worse for your heart, it might not be worse for gout. Organ meats are the worst, but notice that brewer's yeast is 1810 mg/100g. That's over 10X higher than most meats. However, I don't think it's just residual yeast content. I've found the bigger beers inflame my toe more than the lighter ones. It's manageable, but it takes some experimentation. Your toe is like a barometer--it will tell you precisely how much uric acid is in your blood. I'm about 9 months into this, and I've found I can still do the big beers, just not in great quantity, and I have to be careful about how much animal protein I consume. I've only had one near-relapse, and it was over the holidays when I started eating more meat and drinking heavier beers. Mikeler: Good luck--I hope you're 100% soon. Having been through it, I know gout is a huge PITA. If you're like me, you're also asking yourself how a young, fit, healthy-eating guy can have this problem. Don't worry--you'll be back on the court soon. Last edited by Z-Man : 02-18-2012 at 08:39 AM. |
