Because they look better than short socks, and make your legs look better. I think the pros would have to wear long socks so that they prominently display their sponsors logo too... but that's just a guess.

Tradition. Many of these pros are adults from the 70's-80's who wore crew socks (that's what you refer to as long) who wore crews as kids. We all don't wear crews, but it's all a matter of choice.

I only wear long socks on red clay, otherwise I wear the short ones.
I think the long ones look dorky, but on the red it is better than the alternative. J

mens tennis players have worn long socks since the creation of the game. that hasnt changed, and many, such as myself, think wearing long socks is proper tennis etiquette

lol. this thread makes me laugh. i had a non-tennis playing friend come over the other day and he was saying the same thing" "why do tennis players wear such long socks!" showstopper is right, they are only crew length (which is far from "long" as far as sock lengths go). i told my friend to take a look at an nba game. some of those guys wear really long socks! and they are far from nerdy.
this whole wearing short socks so it looks like you're not wearing socks at all look is fairly recent. you lose all cool points at my gym if you wear crew socks. but i couldn't tell you how this has come about.

I agree that for almost everything else, short socks look better. But for tennis, it just doesn't look right

Because it's normal. Low socks and no-shows are for women who want to make their legs look longer and sexier (or men who want to do the same).

Funny, because I think short socks are nerdy, or worse, effeminate.

ankle socks are bad because:
1) You are prone to cuts around the ankle with your shoes rubbing against it. 2) They look awful. |

Mardy Fish wears low cut socks. Take a look.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLp-2bgF778 In general I don't like crew socks, but for some reason I think they look better for tennis. Although I still wear my low cut socks though because I'm too lazy to buy crew socks.
